STREET GANGS GET WEB-SAVVY

Some of the country's most notorious street gangs have gotten Web-savvy, showcasing illegal exploits, making threats, and honoring killed and jailed members on digital turf.

This really is nothing new, but it goes to show you that you cannot give out personal info on the net that such surfers right in your own neighborhood can use against you. I see a lot of this nonsense on places like myspace where web traffic is not monitored.

Why would you possible think you can get away with publishing these things in a public domain? Anything they post can be used by the police without needing a warrant. So they are essentially posting evidence for the police to use. And they will eventually slip up and allow something big on the website to be posted. They just aren't thinking this through. Another question is which other rival gangs have registered internet connections to look at their exploits?

I believe most of them used codes rather than personal identities. They also show their avatars disguised just as they would if they were committing a robbery. Essentially one would have to confiscate the computer / network where these people log on to prove the case - not an easy thing to do - especially when it is so common.

The scary thing is how will we be able to monitor these gangs?

Police control on the internet is way to Orwellian, and not doing anything is also a bad policy.

Moreover, these codes can only be traced by tapping. How will the police know which IP it can be from without police control?

These gangs should be brought to justice, but it looks like will have to scarfice personal liberties for that to be accomplished.

One of the major questions:

Should convicts have internet access?

I just added this as a poll to the Thread.

I say give them access to educational sites maybe they can learn something. As long as they continue to post their exploits sooner or later they are going to be caught. I am sure the police are monitoring the sites to get the addresses down to the perps. I am sure they will get the information they need and get these people off the streets.

I know that is we sacrifice our own liberties on the computer we will have less freedom. I think something needs to be done about some of this information but exactly what I am not sure.
