More than 45 million Americans, or 20 percent of U.S. Adults, had some form of mental illness last year, and 11 million had a serious illness, U.S. Government researchers reported on Thursday. Ref. Source 3
I am a recovering Paranoid Schizophrenic and have been diagnosed with it since 1986. I can tell you this it is one of the worst illnesses in my opinion as there aren't any clear answers as to what causes it and the symptoms are overwhelming even when on medication. A number of causes are said to contribute to its onset but with today's newer medications the symptoms are much better than when I first became I'll. Sometimes though depending on how my day goes it can be almost as if I didn't have the illness as well. The treatment is getting better so there is hope for those suffering.
Oh man I hope I'm not part of that 1 in 5. I know I'm alright now but I have two relatives with Alzhimers and stuff so I hope I don't get it one day.
My great grandmother had Alzheimer's and my husband has PTSD and chronic psychosis. It's still hard to believe that there is such a large number of people suffering with mental illnesses, especially because mental illnesses are usually the most difficult to diagnose and most, if not all, don't have any kind of cure. There are some medications that help, but it just slows the process. It's very sad that all of those people have to suffer that way...
