What is your strategy for confronting the fantasy creature Goblin in Dungeons & Dragons?

I'm still unclear about the divisions in AD&D and D&D - the only AD&D I ever played was 2nd Edition, and although the Monster Manuals and such didn't necessarily directly lend themselves to this interpretation, I was of the opinion there is no such thing as an "evil race", and coupled with goblins' general skittishness (like kobolds), intimidation or even being reassuring to them could completely avoid what could, in some cases, turn into a multi-wave goblin onslaught. Past that, you start pitching them around and hacking them apart - as goblins ARE the fodder of which hack and slash roleplaying games are made - seconded only by orcs for slightly higher level characters.
Yes the strength of numbers can result in some interesting things.
I would think every now and then a Goblin will score or roll a huge number which can change the course of a battle.
