Canada Considers Proposal to Sell Morning After Pill Without Pharmacist

Ottawa, Canada (LifeNews.com) -- Canadian women have been able to purchase the morning after pill without a prescription for three years, but a governmental panel is considering removing more limits by putting the drug on the store shelves and make it so consulting with the pharmacist is no longer necessary. Opponents of the idea say the policy would make Canada the industrialized nation with the most permissive procedures on purchasing the Plan B pill. A representative from the nation's pharmacists group says the new policy opens the door for teenagers and young girls to purchase the drug without any input from a medical professional. "Emergency contraceptives would be more readily available here [under the proposal] than in any developed country," Janet Cooper of the Canadian Pharmacists Association told the National Post. "I'm not sure how comfortable the general public might be if a 14-year-old could just walk in, pick it up off the shelf, buy it, not have any interaction with anybody and come back a month later and do the same thing," she added. "That's not in that girl's best interests."

We are one interesting species. We have learned to kill ourselves over and over in some very interesting ways. Now we can not stop killing when we are adults no we have adults killing our young at any time before they are born to just before they are considered adults.

We are also one of the few species that have sex just for the fun of it. We do not do it just for the creation of more humans but because it feels good. If you look at the human race from a scientific view we are a very interesting while disturbed species.

Canada Pharmacy Association Allows Morning After Pill Sales on Shelves

Canada, Canadian Ottawa, Canada (LifeNews.com) -- The national pharmacy organization in Canada has approved a request to sell the morning after pill "in front of the counter." That means the Plan B drug will be sold on store shelves instead of keeping it behind the pharmacy counter and purchasing the drug through the pharmacist. Once the approval becomes official, Canada will become the fifth country to make the morning after pill as readily available as cough syrup or aspirin. The National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities has accepted a recommendation from the National Drug Scheduling Advisory Committee, which suggested the change after hearing from the drug's Canadian manufacturer, Paladin Labs Inc. Though the agency approved the request, each of the provincial pharmacy associations oversee the regulations in their parts of the nation, so additional decisions will be needed before the drug is made available in front of the counter nationwide. It could be months before those decisions are made and implemented. Once they approve the NAPRA decision, Canada will join Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden and India in putting the morning after pill on the same level as pre-packaged non-prescription medications.

Court Orders FDA to Reconsider Decision Limiting Morning After Pill to Minors

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A federal court on Monday ordered the Food and Drug Administration to reconsider its decision preventing minors from purchasing the morning after pill without a prescription. When the FDA made the Plan B drug available over the counter, it prohibited such sales to people under the age of 18. While pro-life groups were upset the drug was made available without consulting a doctor, they said the limits in selling it to teenagers were necessary. Today, U.S. District Judge Edward R. Korman order the FDA to make the drug available to women as young as 17 within the next 30 days and to consider reversing its entire decision on selling the morning after pill to minors. Korman sided with abortion advocates who claimed the FDA didn't follow its normal protocols when making the decision. The Washington Post indicated Korman said the "record is clear that the FDA's course of conduct regarding Plan B departed in significant ways from the agency's normal procedures regarding similar applications to switch a drug from prescription to non-prescription use." Wendy Wright, the president of Concerned Women for America, said the age restrictions need more enforcement, not less. Wright said selling the morning after pill over the counter will make it easier for men who abuse young women to cover up their crimes. Ref. Source 1

I do not understand the way some people think. I believe that the morning after pill is not a good idea. Now to make it available to anyone who has the money to include minors is even more wrong in my book.

FDA to lower age limit for 'morning-after' pill

WASHINGTON - Seventeen-year-olds will be able to buy the "morning-after" emergency contraceptive without a doctor's prescription, a decision that critics denounced as a blow to parental supervision of teens but that some women's groups said represents sound science. Ref. Source 9

I do not agree with the FDA on lowering the age to 17 for being able to buy this drug. I think this drug is not the right choice for young women.

FDA Allows 17-Year-Olds to Purchase Morning After Pill Over the Counter

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The FDA on Wednesday made the final decision to allow 17-year-old teenage girls to purchase the morning after pill over the counter instead of having to obtain it via a doctor's prescription. The decision comes after a court ruling last month ordering that Plan B be made available over the counter to those 17 and up. The FDA said in a statement that it would not appeal the court's decision. In the order, U.S. District Judge Edward Korman also asked the agency to consider whether the pill should be available to women of all ages without a prescription, saying that such a determination is best left to the expertise of the FDA rather than a federal district judge. He also criticized the FDA for departing from its normal standards by having different standards for the drug for different ages. In August 2006, the FDA approved the sale of Plan B without a prescription to those 18 and older, but those 17 and under needed a prescription to obtain it. While Planned Parenthood hailed the decision, Concerned Women for America was disappointed by it. "Plan B is a high dose of birth control pills. ... The FDA violated its standards when it made the high-dose Plan B available nonprescription to adults. But now the FDA is making the drug available to minors without parental consent," the group said. "Parents should be furious that the FDA is putting their minor daughters at risk." Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach, the FDA's acting commissioner at the time the decision was made, said the agency did not approve the drug for sales to teenagers because Barr, its manufacturer, had not provided enough information about how the morning after pill affects them. CWA says selling the morning after pill over the counter will make it easier for men who abuse young women to cover up their crimes. "Any adult male who is having sex with a minor could walk into a pharmacy, buy the drug, and coax the girl into taking the pill," she said.
