Rick Scott to lead Colombia trip

Florida Gov. Rick Scott will lead business leaders on a trade trip to Bogota, Colombia in early December, the state's public-private trade parternship Enterprise Florida said.
The trip is scheduled for Dec. 2-5. Officials from 20 Florida companies will be able to go with the governor and other state officials. Colombia is Florida's second largest international trading partner with $9 billion in trade between the two nations in 2011.

Feds sign-off on early voting plans for 5 Florida counties

The Department of Justice will not oppose new early voting plans for five Florida counties covered by the Voting Rights Act, according to documents filed Wednesday in federal court.
The counties ? Monroe, Hillsborough, Collier, Hardee and Hendry- must get approval from the federal government before making any election law changes due to histories of discrimination.

Florida settles most of lawsuit on voting list

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida's attempt to screen voting rolls for non-U.S. citizens is yielding a smaller number than state officials anticipated.
The Department of State announced Wednesday that it used a federal immigration database to verify 207 voters are not citizens. Earlier this year the state had suspected that more than 2,600 voters were ineligble and had asked election supervisors to purge those on the list.
State officials, however, said the screening process was still a success because it yielded some ineligible voters.

Fischer, who is running for Duval County School Board District 7, said he never meant for anyone to misunderstand what role he played during his years as an engineer. Around town, people may have believed Fischer served as a uniformed officer in the United States Navy, but he did not. In fact, he was a civilian engineer who did work for the Navy.
