"My first objective is to go to the trees and use it as 'toilet' somehow. Then I will go to look for some woods to make a fire for tonight. It will not be a very chilly night but we will need the fire also to cook some fishes.
Jake, do you think you can handle climbing into that palm tree and get us some coconuts?. Coconuts are great source of nutrition not to mention the jelly inside is quiet tasteful. We will need as much as you can get.
Look! Great! those sticks will work great as a fishing rod!. Come sweetgurl, let's get it and sharp it very very good and go to the water and catch some fishes.
Jake, hey are you going to get some big leaves to make a shelter?. Let me know, so I will know if I have to look for more from here."
Jake wandered the little forest until he found what he was looking for. A brook about two feet in width wound its way through the woods. He followed it down to the beach, then back up to its source. Satisfied that it was good water, he looked around. No real wildlife appeared to be around except birds, lizards and insects.
He noted the trees; which were of the hardwood variety, which were fruit-bearing. Finding a fallen tree, he selected several stout limbs, broke them off and kept them with him.
When he returned to the beach he had three large limbs and two large rocks. Laying them down he went to the southerly side of the island and scouted around. Finding a little glen just on the edge of the woods, He began making a dome-shaped lodge for the ladies. It was patterned after a sweat lodge, but covered with palm fronds interlaced in the weaving wood. It wasn't much, about eight feet in diameter, but it would do.
He gathered more fronds to make pallets for them, deciding they could fancy it up to their own tastes.
By then it was low tide, so he went to the beach and, using one of the large sticks began the laborious task of digging a hole about ten feet away from the actual ebb line. This was going to take some time, he could see, so he paced himself. By the time the tide began to come back in, he had a hole about fifteen feet long, ten feet wide and two feet deep. He figured it would take a week to get what he really wanted.
He went to find the ladies.
"OK Sugar" he called out (Sugarplum was too much of a mouthful), "Where are those coconuts you wanted"?
He looked the situation over. He knew about the bark of those trees. Getting his shoelaces back, he tied his shoes. First he tried one of his large sticks. Too short. That figured.
He went down to the raft and looked the perimeter rope over.
"I"d give a hundred dollars for a K-Bar", he muttered. He worked with the rope until he got it free, then went back to the tree.
Wrapping it around the tree, he pole-climbed up like a lineman. It was slow work in hard-soled shoes, but he made it and managed to knock down two coconuts.
It was getting on to dark now, so he went to check on the ladies.
Sugarplum watch Jake working so hard that she felt bad how bad she treated him earlier...
"Ummm Jake, Ummmm...sorry if I was kind of rude with you earlier. I was crancky because of the whole situation. Thanks for working so hard for us. You're sweet", Sugarplums says while she blink at him.
"Now, guys, it seems like we have the shelter, wood for the fire, water and food!. We are really lucky people."
Look!, sweetgurl and I caught 3 medium fishes for dinner. I have also these herbs I found in some trees and also limes!. I will prepare the fishes with these herbs. It will taste delicious", says Sugarplum.
"Sweetgurl, you go ahead and get some nice fruits, Jake can show you the fruit trees he saw earlier.
"Can anyone help me to set the fire so I can put this fishes to cook?"
"After dinner we can discuss ways to make signs for a possible rescue operation and why not we can talk more about ourselves, after all, we don't know each other much".
Jake grinned at her.
"I didn't think you were rude. I tend to needle people anyway. But we probably want to wait 'till tomorrow for the fruit trees. Dark comes quickly out here".
He got to work, building a spit for the fish. It didn't take long. He hollowed out the ground, making a mental not to gather stones for a more permanant arrangement.
The fire was easy, since he had a lighter. He would not have enjoyed the old bow routine, and didn't have a knife for shavings in the first place. That was another note. He had to fashion a knife somehow, some way.
While the ladies got the fish going, he used the rocks to crack the coconuts. They could also double as water containers. Another note. They had to find a way to boil water. The stream was fresh water, but one never took chances that weren't necessary.
Then he sat back and examined one of the rocks. How was he going to shape it into an axe?
"Here, the fishes are ready. Hmmm!!! Yummy!..it taste delicious! just like I wanted to be!!!" says Sugarplum while she doesn't realize that she's speaking with her mouth full. Anyone want seconds?, she asks. Both Jake and Sweetgurl raise their hands quickly. They drink their coconuts, eat the jelly inside and keep the shell to use it as glasses or containers for water.
Is this little metal container from the survival kit big enough to boil water?, Sugarplum asks to Jake. At least it's something.
Hey, you forgot that in the First Aid kit are a pair of scissors and a lot of more items that I mentioned to you before? (Note: Read my earlier post I named a couple of stuff from the first aid kit). Maybe you can use this sharp scissors as a knife."
The night is here already. We will look for the fruits early in the morning. Let's get some sleep. We will need it for tomorrow. I thought in talking about some methods we can use to be rescued but I think we are all tired to be able to do it now. We will leave it for tomorrow. It's not like we are going somewhere anytime soon".
Okay, is there space to sleep for the three of us?. "
Jake brightened visibly at the mention of scissors.
"Great" he said. "They will work very well with a little adaptation".
"I made the lodge for you two. I'll sleep outside tonight and probably make another one tomorrow. Actually, I pan to make one for each of us. If we're here any length of time, we will need our privacy, so as not to get on each other's nerves".
He got up.
"I'm going for a little walk around the island. You ladies do your thing and turn in when it suits you".
He head out do the beach, moving at a swift jog. He knew he was going to have to get back into shape, and pretty quick. No more booze and parties out here.
"Hey Sweetgurl, sweetgurl, get up there are plenty things to do " whisper Sugarplum to this girl that is extremely quiet. Let's go and find some fresh fruits for breakfast. Since Jake has worked so much for us let us surprise him with a nice breakfast."
"Here it goes. Everything seems ready to eat!"
"Let's go to explore this island too. Hmmmm any idea of what can I use for a hair brush?. My hair is a mess!!!. I need to wash my clothes also! but what can I wear in the mean time?"
Anyone feel for crabs for lunch?. I can make some crab cakes, it will not taste the same like the real thing but I can give it a shot.
"I think is time that we discuss what we are going to do to make signs in the skies to be able to be rescued. Since we have a lantern with batteries we should save it when we see a helicopter around. We should also create some kind of sign for ourselves in case one of us see a plane or helicopter and can let the others know about it. Any other ideas?."
"Look guys. I created this calendar from a piece of wood tree. We can scratch the days we have been here until the day of our rescue, in this way we will have more control over the time."
"We should also make clothing out of leaves" says Sugarplum to Jake knowing he will surely make a joke about looking like Adam and Eves in the Garden of Eden."
"Okay, now. Let me excercise like I do it every day. I need to keep this body in shape!, says Sugarplum like if she does have the need for it. Later on I am planning to give myself a massage and a facial with mud...yeah...mud is great for the body and face. "
During your search of your new surroundings you find something unusual near a tree where the hundreds of crab holes are based. Taking a closer look you realize that it is a wood carving of a crab (about 2 feet square) placed on a rock so as to act as some sort of stature. On the ground in front of it is some ashes that have been mixed with the earth and grass. Apparently someone has been there before. Closer inspection of the statue reveals that it was carved with a primative blade and then somehow made to be smooth with a stone or some kind of sanding procedure.
