Two Penn State officials have stepped down over sex abuse allegations against a former coach.
Athletic Director Timothy Curley and Gary Schultz, the university's senior vice president for finance and business, face charges of one count of perjury each. They stepped down late Sunday after an emergency meeting of the university's board of trustees.
Both Curley and Schultz are accused of misleading a grand jury in its investigation into child s-xual abuse allegations against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. Ref. CNN
Legendary Penn State coach Joe Paterno and school President Graham Spanier have lost their jobs effective immediately, university trustees announced.
Paterno said earlier in the day that he would retire at the end of the season. Critics had called for him to resign because of his response to allegations brought to him in 2002 by a graduate assistant, who said he had seen retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, now 67, sexually assaulting a young boy in a shower at the campus football complex.
Paterno reported the allegations to his boss, and Pennsylvania's attorney general said it appeared Paterno had met his obligations under state law.
Sandusky is accused of s-xual offenses, child endangerment and "corruption of a minor" involving eight boys, prosecutors said. Two Penn State officials are accused of failing to report the alleged abuse.
The U.S. Department of Education said earlier Wednesday that it will la unch an investigation into whether Penn State properly reported crimes on campus. Ref. CNN
The Penn State assistant who told head coach Joe Paterno about Jerry Sandusky's alleged child sex abuse in 2002 has been placed on administrative leave, the interim school president said.
Mike McQueary's leave is "indefinite," said President Rodney Ericson.
McQueary, a graduate assistant in 2002 and now the wide receivers coach, told a grand jury he had witnessed Sandusky, then the defensive coordinator, sexually assaulting a boy in a shower at the campus football complex.
The scandal has led to the departure of four top university figures, including Paterno, amid scrutiny over their perceived failure to contact police. Ref. CNN
Center for the Protection of Children
Penn State will provide $2 million to fund the center, which will provide treatment to victims of s-xual abuse, says University President Rodney Erickson in his first interview since taking office. Erickson said the university is reassessing the role of its football program in the wake of the child s-xual abuse allegations against former coach Jerry Sandusky. Ref. USAToday
Dramatic testimony in Sandusky trial
In four days the state has hit 12 jurors and four alternates with an avalanche of stories, evidence and descriptions they probably could never have imagined. Sandusky, 68, is facing 52 counts of molesting 10 children over 15 years, using his influence as a Penn State assistant football coach and the local Second Mile charity to prey on disadvantaged youth. He maintains his innocence.
