Wall of Thorns Spell
D&D Description of the Wall of Thorns Spell : A wall of thorns spell creates a barrier of very tough, pliable, tangled brush bearing needle-sharp thorns as long as a human's finger. Any creature forced into or attempting to move through a wall of thorns takes slashing damage per round of movement equal to 25 minus the creature's AC. Dexterity and dodge bonuses to AC do not count for this calculation. (Creatures with an Armor Class of 25 or higher, without considering Dexterity and dodge bonuses, take no damage from contact with the wall.)

Sadly I never see spells like this used. The slot is usually filled by some other attack spell that has a sure use in combat. If this spell is used along with some kind of tactical attack. Such as covering an escape route or trapping someone underwater, then yes this spell is really great.
The thing is I never see spells like this used this way. The chances that you will have the maximum effect of such a spell in a random encounter is slim. Although this is a good spell to keep up your NPC's sleeve if your a GM. Having a scroll or something like that couldn't hurt for a player also.
