Fire Burning At Provo Tabernacle

I really hope they can save this building! It's historical. It was built in 1883 and took 15 years to complete. I am guessing another intentional fire....but who knows!

international QUOTE
PROVO -- Smoke is billowing from the top of the Provo Tabernacle as firefighters battle to save the historic building.

Authorities say the fire was called in at 2:43 a.m. Flames continue to leap from the top of the building at 100 S. University Ave. Crews are using a ladder to shoot water on the roof and sides of the building.

No word yet on what caused the fire and we are not aware of any injuries.

The tabernacle was built in 1883 and took 15 years to complete for a cost of $100,000. It is one of the oldest buildings in the state and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

The fire is heartbreaking for many onlookers, like James Erickson. "I almost want to cry. So many memories in there and not a bad one," he said....

The roof has totally collapsed. They do not know yet what will happen to the rest of the building yet, that will probably be determined today. This is not just a historic building that has been lost but there was also a recording studio there so much of the equipment used also went up in smoke.

They have only now been sifting through everything to get to the cause. Soon we should find out if this was a result of arson:

"Getting the debris out will help investigators actually get in and start going through, sifting through the rubble to find the cause," said Provo Deputy Fire Chief Gary Jolley. "They've isolated a few points of interest where they want to start." Ref. Source 5

I read this morning that the alarms went off some 90 minutes before the whole thing was reported.

Church Statement Regarding Ongoing Provo Tabernacle Fire Investigation

The property is still under the control of local authorities as they seek to find answers regarding the cause of the fire. When that process is complete we will have the opportunity to evaluate the building and determine the best course of action. We anticipate this will be a lengthy process, but we will make our plans known as soon as we are able. Ref. Source 7

I thought that by now we would have at least the proof of whether it was intentional or not. Why is it taking so long?
