South Salt Lake police arrest man in arson of 2 LDS chapels
Patrick Ehat, 26, of Salt Lake City, was arrested at 2:30 a.m. Sunday - about 23 hours after the first church fire was reported. Both churches had broken windows, and police reports state that Ehat has injuries consistent with climbing through a broken window. Ref. Source 7
I'm not part of your faith but It angers me when people take this action. When you do a crime against one person its usually just that person affected but when you damage a whole building it affects 100s of people for a long time.
Ever since the Prop 8 debacle in California, the LDS church and all its members have been under condemnation. There are lists on the Internet with all the names of people who donated to the bill's passage and the amounts donated. "Stop the Haters" I think it's called. I know, because my name is on one. So, I take it as a given that at some point I will be targeted for a hate crime, whether it's myself personally or my church meetinghouse.
Yes, I'm sure it's some kind of revenge, or at least a hate crime. I would anticipate more, and worse, coming in the future.
An arrest was made in the 2006 arson of an LDS church building thanks to DNA evidence found at the scene. The perpetrator was in jail already so link him to the crime was pretty easy since they didn't have to go and look for him.
