Well, LDS, I know it isn't fun to be thrown in the deep end, but the rational behind that, is they gotta swim if they are gonna get out to complain about it. That was how my grandfather taught me to swim. He'd take the boat out to the middle of the lake and toss me overboard and have me flail until I could get back to the boat. He'd let me catch my breath then toss me in again. Until I could swim decent like. |
I gotta tell ya, my grandson has been taking swimming lessons since he was about 1 1/2 years old and if any teacher had ever done anything to make him afraid of the water like throwing him in, I would be all over them!!! It is crazy and I don't think it is the right way to teach any kid how to swim. Even if it sometimes works because it doesn't really teach them the proper way to swim it only teaches them to claw until someone helps them. That isn't really swimming, plus I think it should be fun not work or fear that motivates someone to swim. My grandson's teacher is great, she lets him flail a bit before she helps him, but that is because she has been his teacher for 1 1/2 years and knows him well. Also, she is always careful not to let kids get scared, but she works to build up their confidence in her and then in themselves.
