This Thread will be used to examine the Mormon interpretation for the word(s) / name(s) called "Magdalene" from the scriptures. What does Magdalene mean in the literal sense and in scripture as Mormons know it?

Mormon definition of Magdalene.

The way I understand it was to denote that Mary was from the city of Magdala which is near the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. This was a common practice during that time because people did not have surnames.

I wonder how they handled the fact that two people were maybe from the same area and had the exact same name?

Well for example lets say my name is John and my fathers name is Jacob and I am from the city of Dan. It might be something like this. John son of Jacob from Dan.

Thanks for the information. I always thought it was fascinating the fact there were no surnames at that time, I am assuming people knew each other more so they had to be quite careful about their behavior as to not put shame on family and city.
