I am a graduate from the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla. The school, when I went there 20yrs ago, was basically a engineering school only. There were about 5 to 6 thousand students with the majority being foreign (indian, chinese and korean).
The greek system at the Rolla campus is the best way to go. There are several fraternities that are actually less expensive to live in as opposed to the dorms. Additionally, you will have access to more social events and potentially a file system if your fraternity keeps one.
The faculty to student ratio was not bad, but do not expect your professors to have a great deal of time for you as the the faculty is immersed in research that keeps the money flowing into the university.
My degree was in Ceramic Engineering. This university has a metallurgy and ceramics program with allows for more specialization as opposed to a material science degree. However, you can find just about any engineering or science degree that you can think of at this university.
The first day I was at the university we had a welcome meeting with the chancellor of the college. Kind of went like this:
Hello, welcome to the University of Missouri - Rolla (name back then). I am chancellor xxxx. Before we get started today, let's take a moment and get to know each other. Please standup and introduce yourself to the person on your left...and now your right. Good. Now, one of you is going to recieve a degree from this university.
Yes, the drop out rate for undergrads was pretty high about 20 years ago. I know they are trying to start up a liberal arts program at the university, but if you go that route you will likely go to the University of Missouri - Columbia.
If you get a degree from the university, it will serve you well. However, if you are looking for a great social education to go with your scholastic...go to Columbia. If you want to be challenged and become an engineer...MU S&T will do you right.
Sorry...cant talk about tuition...too long ago to be applicable now.
