White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley is stepping down and will be replaced by budget director Jack Lew, according to senior aides to President Barack Obama.
Daley returned from vacation Tuesday and met with Obama and offered his resignation. The president asked him to reconsider.
They met again the following day, and according to one aide, Daley said it would be the best thing for everyone if he stepped aside.
The White House announced in November that some of Daley's responsibilities had been taken over by Pete Rouse, who was interim chief of staff after Rahm Emanuel resigned to run for mayor of Chicago. A senior administration official said at the time the move acknowledged the reality that Daley's greatest strength wasn't in day-to-day management.
The president will deliver a statement on the staffing change at 3 pm ET Monday from the State Dining Room. CNN's Wolf Blitzer and Jessica Yellin will have full coverage and analysis on CNN TV. CNN.com also will have live coverage. Ref. CNN
