Do you agree with what happened to this teenager or do you think the whole thing was blown out of proportion? Take into consideration the student doesn't have a criminal record so this is the first time she is going through this.

School across this nation do not mess around any more. Even if this was a honest mistake the family will have to take it up with the school board. The good thing is she is only 17 so this "incident" will be on her Juvenile record and sealed when she is 18. I hope that they can get her back in school to finish the education. Keeping her from that is the real tragedy.
I agree with you KNtoran. I think that they over reacted big time. I mean, if they really want to suspend her, they should have taken... Maybe 2 weeks tops. I remember leaving school for a week and having a hard time catching up, that alone should help keep this from happening again, but the rest of the school year?! Give the child the benefit of the doubt so she doesn't have to miss graduating with all of her friends! Not to mention she might not go back to school because of what happened.
I find the whole thing ridiculous, even though I understand the safety concerns I think a child like her who did not have a prior record, was a good student, etc and did not utilize the knife in a threatening manner shouldn't be punished like this. I would be interested in reading statistics of weapon-related crimes in schools, maybe it could add a different perspective.
