An obese German cat six times the normal weight has gone on a hunger strike at a Berlin animal shelter after being taken from his owner who had fed him 4.4 pounds of mince daily, Bild newspaper reported on Saturday. Mikesch, weighing nearly 41 pounds, was brought to the animal shelter on April 1 and was so overweight he could not take more than four steps without becoming exhausted. His elderly owner was at the same time taken to a nursing home. Shelter officials said 6-year-old Mikesch is so fat he cannot clean himself and suffers from heart trouble. They said he felt lost without his meat-feeding owner and stopped eating altogether when he was put on a diet to gradually lose weight https://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4724042/ |
The other part of this is... we can love them enough to make sure they get exercise and are clean. Afterall there are toys available and companies that can be called in to check up on your pet if you cannot do it yourself. It is possible that this was a 'too much of a good thing' scenario and the cat has to pay the price.
Awww poor cat!. I think the lady meant well but again it's obvious she is not aware that she's putting her loveky cat in danger. We can compare this with those mother who over feed their children to the point of obesity. This is such a sad thing specially because the children will suffer so much.
Back in Argentina I used to have cats that used to eat a lot but I used to give them a variety of food (not only meats), I had also a dog who was very short and fatty and we have to put her on a diet because she was not breathing properly, she didn't it too much but she used to put on weight very quickly. If you love your pet, you're concern about your pet's health.
There comes a point though where a person has to realize that they are harming their pets (or children) more than they are helping them. I think too many parents (of pets or children) are pitied on when their pets and kids are overweight and they admit overfeeding them etc. That is part of being an adult is responsibility, and knowing when enough is enough.
I think the point is that some owners are also overweight and they do not realize the extent of it, therefore, they really think they are loving the pet by feeding him constantly to the point that one day the pet just died and they wonder why.
