Moon Seen as Astronomical Outpost
The barren Moon could become an astronomer's paradise, an ideal spot for telescopes and other devices to scope out the heavens as never before.
Creating the lunar lookout is one proposal under review during the weeklong fifth gathering of the International Lunar Exploration Working Group (ILEWG) being held this week on the Kohala Coast, Hawai'i Island. Astronauts, scientists and engineers, as well as business people and entrepreneurs are sharing ways to convert the bleak Moon into a bustling, off-Earth continent for scientific research, technology testing, producing energy, even as practice ground for future expeditions to Mars.
Representatives from various spacefaring nations, including China, India, and Japan are taking part in the event, seeking to develop global and inter-global partnerships to further a lunar exploration agenda.

This is sorta old news, but I just came up on it and thought I would throw it out there and see what ppl's views are about possibly working from the moon.
What are your thoughts?
That would be quite hard. They would have to be able to somehow grow food there, have enough water to drink and air to breath. For energy they would probably use the sun, assuming that they would be in the illuminated side. If so, they would have to deal with the high incidence of UV rays, since there's no ozone layer to block them.
Etc., etc., etc.
Of course there are many problems to overcome before settling in the moon, but would be very interesting to have this kind of stuff over there.
Unless they want to have computer-operated telescopes and devices there, so it would be much easier since they could control them from Earth.
I don't know, what is the weather like? I think I would get cabin fever, because you would really have to stay inside all the time since there is not an atmosphere that we can breath.
I don't think the moon has much weather....its just space. Mars on the other hand... Thats a whole different story. They have certain plants that don't need carbon dioxide, these are hybrid plants that are currently in production. I heard that they plan to put a bunch of these on the moon so it can have an atmosphere. they have a bunch of weird stuff at NASA i bet...
This is like the oldest post in this board and yet its talking about something I think they're going to be doing next on the moon. I think they want to see if they can survive the moon then they can survive mars. Got to look out for meteors!
Survival on the moon would not be hard at all. We have the technology to build a habitat for us on the moon. We take the supplies up to build a greenhouse type building to place pants in there. That is our source of oxygen for the place. Now we start to mine some of the ores from the moon itself to help process the metals needed to build the station. We can also look to getting some of the space debris out of the earths orbits to use to build some of the complex. Soon we can have a very workable habitat on the moon and from there be ready to branch out to Mars and mining material from the astroid belt.
