Official LDS books

In other threads we were discussing about how many books are official of the LDS Church so JB suggested to start a thread about it.so here it is

Now, first of all we should define the following:

1. What it means to be 'official'
2. How many books of the Church are official
3. Your thoughts about it

Yesterday, I found that Jesus the Christ is a publication of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.does it make it 'official'?

Difficult questions. They are also very perplexing, especially to both the anti-mormons and the apologists.

I would have to say that they are documents that are published by the Church, under the direction of the First Presidency.

Actually, quite a few. I would have to include all of the lesson manuals, the FHE manuals through the years, the Ensign, the New Era, the Friend, and the Liahona. Also, all Conference Reports. Then add the books such as Jesus the Christ. I haven't looked at my copies of these books, but I would expect that The Articles of Faith, and A Marvelous Work and a Wonder would be included in them.

My question would be whether or not there are a group of older works that at one time were official, but are not now considered official. I am thinking specifically of The Kingdom of God by John Taylor and the Lectures on Faith.

As I have mentioned elsewhere I am becoming ever more convinced that it is more important that we each receive the Holy Ghost, and use this gift to guide us to truth. Official books or works are wonderful to help us explain the doctrines and beliefs, especially to an unbelieving world. Apologists must always strive to use "official works" in order to combat error and distortion.

Again, though, the problem is that once a book or document is considered official, then the critics and apostates will use any discrepancies within or between those official works to cause problems. I have seen this many, many times.

I believe it does, yes. I know that this is the criteria teachers are supposed to be instructed to follow when deciding from where they can quote in a lesson.

I was discussing this forum with a friend of mine (trying to get her to check it out ;D) and she said that anything sold by the Church distribution center is considered official. I don't know, but this seems to make sense because the Church distribution center is a part of the Church.

Any literature that is published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is indeed official.

This is true.

I am the Branch Librarian, and I have just been instructed to remove all the books, magazines, films, etc. that are NOT in the Church Distrubution Order Book. That if it is not published by the Church, it is not to be in the library.

Too many members think that if it is sold by Deseret Books, then it is official LDS literature. Deseret Books is not owned by the Church. The owners are LDS.
