I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and we are instructed to have a two years food storage.
Having a two year food storage is good, but do we all know how to prepare meals with it? Lets say you have canned meat, vegetables, and fruit; flour, shortening, spices, herbs that you have dehydrated yourself.
The thing about food storage is you have to use from it, rotate it. Flour will only keep for up to 7 years in ideal conditions. Canned foods should be used before the cans get rusty, boxed/packaged go go stale or can get bugs in them.
In my food storage I have canned potatoes, canned mixed vegetables, biscuit mix, canned meats (beef, chicken, tuna, salmon and *mackerel *this I will feed to the cats, 'cause I don't like it ) powdered milk, powdered buttermilk. I also have vegetables I have dehydrated myself. Plus a lot more.
OKay, just from what I have listed above I can make a quick stew:
For just two people:
1 -16oz. can beef, with the juice
1 -16oz can Veg All (name brand mixed vegetables), do not drain.
1/4 cup. each; home dehydrated onion, green peppers, red peppers, mushrooms.
(in the freezer I have diced celery, so I will throw in about 1/4 cup of that too.)
1 -14 oz. can diced tomatoes
1 bay leaf - discard before serving
Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until dehydrated vegetables are reconstituted and tender. Thicken with flour and water if you like it thick.
Mix up a batch of biscuits using powdered buttermilk mixed with water in place of the water/milk called for on the box. Serve with the stew along with honey or jam.
So, do you have any good recipes to share that will use and utilize what you have in food storage?
