These are the instructions for how to replace a activated carbon water pitcher (fill it with boiled water) with your own activated carbon (much cheaper). You would have to buy the Brita or whatever brand pitcher first, but after that the maintenance should be pretty cheap.

Comments: Boil the water only until you see a few bubbles start to form and then turn it off and the water will not taste so bad.
