global warming Global warming has been in and out as the "latest" hot topic for many years. It is, according to modern scientists, the result of man-made industrial pollutants, clearing forested areas, agriculture, etc. But now they are thinking it started way before the Industrial Revolution...

Can the world share the burden of climate change?

For anyone who hasn't seen the news for the last few months, a February report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded that global warming from the release of heat-trapping "greenhouse" gases was "very likely" in this century, driving average surface temperatures up about 3 to 7 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the amount of emissions. On Friday, the same panel released a report finding that warming is already affecting plants, animals and people, with worse to come - droughts, extinctions and desertification - as conditions head towards the high end of the temperature projection.

The group Step it Up is spearheading the National Day of Climate of Action on Saturday. Tens of thousands of Americans are gathering across the country in the largest-ever demonstration against global warming. Over thirteen hundred rallies, demonstrations and actions are being held in all fifty states to call on Congress to cut carbon emissions by 80 percent by the year 2050. Global Warming: Natural Or Man-made? History & Civil Business Politics

Time Magazine's March 29 issue contains an article called "51 Things We Can Do" to reduce global warming. Some of the items on the list are common sense for pollution reduction, others are just bizarre. For instance, it's common sense to keep your car tuned and the tires inflated properly; it's bizarre to move to a high-rise in downtown New York (their reasoning being that most New Yorkers don't own cars and use public transportation instead, among other "green" things). Carpooling is common sense; avoiding making left-hand turns whenever possible is just bizarre (according to UPS, waiting for cross-traffic to pass wastes fuel and emits more co2 than making several right-hand turns to get where you're going).

And there are several items on their list that the "average Joe" couldn't possibly "do" - build a skyscraper, get in on "carbon trading." Each item is listed by how much impact it would have on global warming, how long it would take to have an effect, and the "feel-good factor": how good it makes you feel to do it.

Can one person slow global warming? Actually, yes. You-along with scientists, businesses and governments-can create paths to cut carbon emissions. Here is our guide to some of the planet's best ideas, with an assessment of their impact and feel-good factor

I don't know whether this guy is a kook or not. However, there is a lot of information to support his claims.

https://www.iceagenow.com/

He wrote a book called Not by Fire but by Ice. He claims that there the evidence is opposite what we keep hearing.

Here are some of the things he has to say:

  • the water levels are lower in the Atlantic and Arctic oceans
  • glaciers around the world are growing at tremendous rates
  • there is global warming on Mars, Titan, and Pluto
  • while there is apparently an increase in temperature in the Arctic Ocean, there is also a new found string of volcanoes that are active under it

There is some pretty compelling information there. Of course it isn't politically correct, and there are certain members of this forum who will disregard his statements since they disagree with their deeply held beliefs concerning humanity. But it is still interesting reading.

One of the items that I found interesting in "The Al Gore Show" (An Inconvenient Truth) movie, was the big red graph that was returned to again and again, and emphasized and pointed out and raised above screen level, etc etc etc. Why? Because it showed over the past 650,000 years, the earth has gone through cycle after cycle of heating - which would peak and then be followed by long cooling spells - what appeared to me as approximately every 100,000 years.

What was shown is that the current 100,000-year heating cycle is at a major peak; so what then is the next logical step? Cooling. ( duh! )

Secondly, when the screen rose up to show where the co2 levels are right now (according to these scientists), the temperature level was not shown to correspond with it... nor did the"estimate" of future co2 levels show where the "estimated" temperature might be at that time. Why not? Because it's not happening that way... can't show what doesn't gibe, now can they?

Global Warming: Natural Or Man-made?

It seems like things got pretty heated (no pun intended) between Sheryl Crow, Laurie David and Mr. Rove at the White House Correspondents Dinner. The issue? Global Warming.

QUOTE
Last night Thelma and Louise drove the bus off the cliff or at least into the White House Correspondents Dinner. The "highlight" of the evening had to be when we were introduced to Karl Rove. How excited were we to have our first opportunity ever to talk directly to the Bush Administration about global warming.

We asked Mr. Rove if he would consider taking a fresh look at the science of global warming. Much to our dismay, he immediately got combative. And it went downhill from there.

We reminded the senior White House advisor that the US leads the world in global warming pollution and we are doing the least about it. Anger flaring, Mr. Rove immediately regurgitated the official Administration position on global warming which is that the US spends more on researching the causes than any other country.

We felt compelled to remind him that the research is done and the results are in (www.IPCC.ch). Mr. Rove exploded with even more venom. Like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum, Mr. Rove launched into a series of illogical arguments regarding China not doing enough thus neither should we. (Since when do we follow China's lead?)

At some point during his ramblings, we became heartbroken to think that the President of the United States and his top advisers have partially built a career on global warming not being real. We have been telling college students across the country for the past two weeks that government does not change until people demand it... well, listen up folks, everyone had better get a lot louder because the message clearly is not getting through.

In his attempt to dismiss us, Mr. Rove turned to head toward his table, but as soon as he did so, Sheryl reached out to touch his arm. Karl swung around and spat, "Don't touch me." How hardened and removed from reality must a person be to refuse to be touched by Sheryl Crow? Unphased, Sheryl abruptly responded, "You can't speak to us like that, you work for us." Karl then quipped, "I don't work for you, I work for the American people." To which Sheryl promptly reminded him, "We are the American people...

I don't think Karl Rove is the best choice to approach about anything, frankly, but it was very surprising to me to read about his harsh reaction to their questioning.

This is the weirdest article I've read on global warming so far.

Rather off topic, but...

Excuse me? "..hardened and removed from reality..." ?!? I think this author is a little removed from reality. Sheryl's just another celebrity.

Okay, I'm starting to believe that this sojourn around the US with Sheryl Crow on a bio-diesel bus is some kind of global warming spoof. This *can't* be real.

QUOTE
"I propose a limitation be put on how many squares of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting. Now, I don't want to rob any law-abiding American of his or her God-given rights, but I think we are an industrious enough people that we can make it work with only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where 2 to 3 could be required."

Crow also said on her web-site that paper napkins "represent the height of wastefulness". She has designed a clothing line with what she calls a "dining sleeve".

It is detachable and can be replaced with another sleeve after the diner has wiped his mouth. "This idea could also translate quite well to those suffering with an annoying head cold," she writes, but she does not prescribe how many wipes per nostril.

Please tell me this is satire?!?
