Global warming, global cooling, now global warming again in my lifetime. Every 25 years they try scaring us with freezing, or roasting. Only this time it is being made into a religion. You that are still young will live to hear global cooling and many "scientist" will have egg on their face. Try reading some common sense for a change.

"There can be little doubt that the language used to convey alarm has been sloppy at best," Lindzen said, citing Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbles and his famous observation that even a lie will be believed if enough people repeat it.

Another item which reminds us that the Earth has her own agenda. These events are based on changes in gravity, and the circulation of the oceans based on salinity levels.

NASA Sees Arctic Ocean Circulation Do an About-Face November 13, 2007 PASADENA, Calif. - A team of NASA and university scientists has detected an ongoing reversal in Arctic Ocean circulation triggered by atmospheric circulation changes that vary on decade-long time scales. The results suggest not all the large changes seen in Arctic climate in recent years are a result of long-term trends associated with global warming. ..... "Our study confirms many changes seen in upper Arctic Ocean circulation in the 1990s were mostly decadal in nature, rather than trends caused by global warming," said Morison. "While some 1990s climate trends, such as declines in Arctic sea ice extent, have continued, these results suggest at least for the 'wet' part of the Arctic -- the Arctic Ocean -- circulation reverted to conditions like those prevalent before the 1990s," he added. ..... The Arctic Oscillation was fairly stable until about 1970, but then varied on more or less decadal time scales, with signs of an underlying upward trend, until the late 1990s, when it again stabilized. During its strong counterclockwise phase in the 1990s, the Arctic environment changed markedly, with the upper Arctic Ocean undergoing major changes that persisted into this century. Many scientists viewed the changes as evidence of an ongoing climate shift, raising concerns about the effects of global warming on the Arctic. ..... 'Grace' [satellite] monitors tiny month-to-month changes in Earth's gravity field caused primarily by the movement of water in Earth's land, ocean, ice and atmosphere reservoirs. As such it can infer changes in the weight of columns of ocean water |

Morison cautioned that while the recent decadal-scale changes in the circulation of the Arctic Ocean may not appear to be directly tied to global warming, most climate models predict the Arctic Oscillation will become even more strongly counterclockwise in the future. "The events of the 1990s may well be a preview of how the Arctic will respond over longer periods of time in a warming world," he said. |

Well, at this point, we know that global warming is happening. Theres been almost a complete degree increase in global temperature right now. Thats actually quit a bit. The polar caps are melting and what was originally projected is actually happening much faster. Why is that important? Because the ice caps, being white, reflect much of our sunlight and thus heat back into space. Less ice means less reflections and thus more heat. More heat absorbed by the oceans means temperature sensitive creatures and environments will have more and more problems, which is why the corral reefs are going to eventually fade away. Some creatures that once were held in check by cooler waters are now thriving in the warm waters and completely changing ecosystems.
Global warming isn't a debate any more, they are just debating whether we are causing it or its natural. Well, I hope its us, and that we can make a change, because if its natural, then we are going to be in bad shape. At least if its man made, we can make a difference. If its natural, we are just along for the ride.
"We Are Now In The Danger Zone": Leading Australian Scientist Tim Flannery on Climate Change and How To Save the Planet
We spend the hour with one of the world's leading scientists studying climate change, Tim Flannery. An Australian mammologist, palaeontologist and field zoologist, he has discovered and named more than thirty new species of mammals. He has been described as being in the league of all-time great explorers such as David Livingstone. Flannery might be best known as the author of the bestselling book "The Weather Makers: The History and Future Impact of Climate Change." Earlier this year he was named 2007 Australian of the Year. Tim Flannery recently spoke before a packed crowd at the Lensic Theater in Santa Fe New Mexico as part of "Readings and Conversations," a series sponsored by the Lannan Foundation. Today, Tim Flannery's speech on the environment, how human activity is altering the earth's climate and what we can do to save it.

Global warming could damage nearly 60 percent of the Amazon forest by 2030.

BALI, Indonesia - The impact of climate change plus deforestation could wipe out or severely damage nearly 60 percent of the Amazon forest by 2030 - making it impossible to keep global temperatures from reaching catastrophic levels, an environmental group said Thursday. ADVERTISEMENT Several recent studies have suggested similar findings, but scientists say the size and complexity of the Amazon leaves many questions about the rain forest's future open to debate. Brazil's Environment Ministry did not respond this week to a request for comment. "The importance of the Amazon forest for the globe's climate cannot be underplayed," said Daniel Nepstad, author of a new report by the World Wide Fund For Nature released at the U.N. climate change conference in Bali. "It's not only essential for cooling the world's temperature, but also such a large source of fresh water that it may be enough to influence some of the great ocean currents, and on top of that, it's a massive store of carbon." Sprawling over 1.6 million square miles, the Amazon covers nearly 60 percent of Brazil. Largely unexplored, it contains one-fifth of the world's fresh water and about 30 percent of the world's plant and animal species - many still undiscovered. Large swaths of forest like the Amazon are also valuable "carbon sinks," or absorbers of carbon dioxide. Deforestation pours carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and at the same time kills off carbon-absorbing vegetation... |

Isn't it terrible what humans are doing to poor mother earth! But you know there is hope, because the same people that are making all these dire predictions are the same ones that predicted our oceans would be gone in ten years if humans didn't change our ways. Of course that was almost 11 years ago.

It is terrible what us humans are doing to mother earth. I am glad we can agree on something Mousetrails. I am not sure which theory you are referring to about the oceans disappearing? Can you please provide a link to it?
I would advise everyone, if you have a spare 15-20 minutes, to read the Tim Flannery talk on Democracy Now that is linked in a previous post. Flannery is a very well respected scientist in Australia and widely regarded as an expert on such matters.
The interesting parts I gathered from this are:

"When we look into the heavens, we think that-or we can imagine the atmosphere just goes on forever, and it doesn't really matter what we throw into it, a bit as Dr. William Gray said, human impact's just too small. In order to understand why that's wrong, we"ve got to carry out a bit of a thought experiment and imagine, if we could, compressing all of the gases in this great aerial ocean a thousand times until they become a liquid. We"d need to do that, because air is about a thousand times less dense than water. If you could carry out that thought experiment and then imagine comparing the oceans with the great aerial ocean, what you"d discover is that this atmosphere of ours is only one-five-hundredth the size of the oceans-one-five-hundredth." |

Eco-friendly kangaroo farts could help global warming. Really? Where in the world scientists get these theories from?
QUOTE |
SYDNEY (AFP) - Australian scientists are trying to give kangaroo-style stomachs to cattle and sheep in a bid to cut the emission of greenhouse gases blamed for global warming, researchers say. ADVERTISEMENT Thanks to special bacteria in their stomachs, kangaroo flatulence contains no methane and scientists want to transfer that bacteria to cattle and sheep who emit large quantities of the harmful gas. While the usual image of greenhouse gas pollution is a billowing smokestack pushing out carbon dioxide, livestock passing wind contribute a surprisingly high percentage of total emissions in some countries. "Fourteen percent of emissions from all sources in Australia is from enteric methane from cattle and sheep," said Athol Klieve, a senior research scientist with the Queensland state government. "And if you look at another country such as New Zealand, which has got a much higher agricultural base, they're actually up around 50 percent," he told AFP. Researchers say the bacteria also makes the digestive process much more efficient and could potentially save millions of dollars in feed costs for farmers. "Not only would they not produce the methane, they would actually get something like 10 to 15 percent more energy out of the feed they are eating," said Klieve. Even farmers who laugh at the idea of environmentally friendly kangaroo farts say that's nothing to joke about, particularly given the devastating drought Australia is suffering. "In a tight year like a drought situation, 15 percent would be a considerable sum," said farmer Michael Mitton... |
