Again, all anti-global warming people better hope it man made. Because it is happening and if its natural, we are in big trouble. Thinking its no big deal means you don't really understand the consequences of global warming. There are now parts of Antarctica that scientists thought were immune from global warming that are now melting. By the time there is enough evidence to convince every skeptic (which are almost exclusively in the united states), it will be to late.
Why are we still beating this dead horse? This thread has taken on a life of its own. 24 pages and those of us that realize how insignificant we are on this planet are still trying to explain the simple facts to the wide eyed wonders of the world. Let it alone. Let them wonder and wander among themselves. Global warming has become a religion and you very seldom convert a solid "believer" from one religion to another. It takes faith to believe in any religion and the wide eyed want to believe in global warming, (now called global climate change to cover the ice) so give it up. You're wasting your time and your intelligence and wit could be better used on another thread.

It could be affected by a 25cm rise in sea levels by 2050, the Trust is warning. |

I am pretty sure that 1 inch is about 2.54 cm. I have to convert this stuff all the time. That makes their numbers all coincide. Now, determining if they are right or wrong is another question!
Underwater volcanoes create several islands within that 100 years. We probably aren't going to bulldoze those into the sea. Yes, some island will go underwater and some will rise from it and they have throughout time. The boundaries of countries will all change in regards to the amount of water in the oceans and plate drift.
I am all for reducing pollution and I do not subscribe to the "Global Warming Theory". However, I do not like looking out the window here at work and seeing smog all the time from China (I am in Taiwan). I just don't like breathing it. There is no way that it can be good for me. However, there needs to be real plans instead of just tossing money at the issue and setting arbitrary targets. There needs to be incentives and not penalties to grow green technology and the markets need to value the effort.
For instance, I work in a particular industry where our customers have asked for a environmentally friendly product. We spent way more money than a smaller company could to develop the product for them and they loved it. Only one problem... They didn't want to pay extra for the environmentally friendly part. So yes, they want it...but they don't want to pay for it. So guess what we did? In the business world, if the choice is more profit or less profit for the same amount of material, you can pretty well guess the decision made. You might be thinking that this would have increased the price of the product quite a bit, but I am only talking about adding another $7 to a product that you spend about $1,500 USD to purchase.
A simple thing such as a catalytic converter for your car does wonders for reducing the emissions. However, many countries still do not require this for their cars. Why? Not sure. However, when asked about why this is not a "option" for a car, price is the main reason no one wants it (used to work in this industry). The US just makes it mandatory so all cars get the bump up in price. However, there was a upgrade to the catalytic converter that made it even better. A preheater for before you start the engine. A preheated catalytic converter works better and at start is when you emit a lot of pollution. This was a optional package for a few models of cars...and they sold basically none. We are talking about an extra $100 to the price of a car. Why...it wasn't valued enough and it took about a extra 5 minutes planning before you started your car...so we don't want to be inconvenienced too much on our quest for a "greener" environment. Enough about catalytic converters and we wont even discuss that using a lawnmower or gas powered weed trimmer may put your cars emissions to shame.
Environmentally more friendly cars have actually been around for a while (hybrids), but they aren't the top selling ones. They have been pretty pricey. At the higher price, not many were sold. I will bet that the majority of the scientist that proclaim global warming have not purchased one. Why? Their polluting of the environment was not worth that much to them. They didn't say it but their actions, as well as most in the global warming movement, say quite a bit. I know when I looked at purchasing a car the last time (about 5 yrs ago)...I glanced at a Hybrid, but took a look at the sticker price and glanced in a different direction. Even with the price of gas what it is, my decision has resulted in more money in my pocket.
So what have I done for encouraging Green Technology development? That is what all that agree with the movement need to ask and your dollars speak louder than words! I myself have done little (except for developing technologies) in my consumer life to support Green Technology, but I do not really subscribe to the Global Warming Theory. Honestly, I would probably buy a hybrid car for my next purchase, but that is really because I am cheap and want to be personally less dependant on gas. The price still needs to continue to trend down on them though, because truthfully, the gas savings is not that much when you factor the additional price, electric cost and interest on your loan.
In the capitalistic society that most of us live in, consumer spending makes change. What you will and will not spend your money on will greatly change what goes out onto the market. Politician generate wind and bureaucracy...consumers will generate true change! If there are really that many people that believe in "global warming" the money doesnt even need to come from governments that cannot even decide on human rights and hold a election that is not suspect. It is almost the opposite of that quote from Field of Dreams...If you build it, they will come. The truth is..."If you buy it, they will make more and better".
Rather off topic, but... Sorry...off my soapbox now. Just had a tough day of dealing with customers (the accountants and sales engineers) that do not want to pay extra for a "green" product that cost us more to make. Another "Green" request that was fulfilled, but not valued. |

Comments: Hi, I just read some of your comments, Very interesting. Frankly, I must admit, I am don't know what theory or who's right when it comes to Global Warming. But in watching the History Channel the other night on the subject of the date "2012", in which many Different Cultures are predicting an Apocalyptic End for our planet or possibly Mankind? But what caught my interest was one explanation of what Scientist are now noticing is that this date "2012" has the planets aligned in a certain way, and will cause the "EARTH to ROTATE ON ITS AXIS" OR What they call have a "POLAR SHIFT" Could this be the real reason for "Global Warming" and it's now in its early stages, I'm beginning to wonder?.., Maybe it's not Mankind being the Cause of the Climate Change....Helpler
