Babies Die In Public Hospitals
There has always been suggestions and now greater proof that there is so much bacteria / diseases or bad handling of newborns at Public Hospitals in Trinidad & Tobago that it makes you wonder who would choose a Public Hospital for their delivery. Of course the immediate answer would be that people just cannot afford it. My reply would be... Are you willing to take the chance that your newborn will die?
Now, it seems that this country is not the only one in the heat over this issue:

This is a big issue. I heard so many sad stories on tv and newspaper about how public hospital handle deliveries. It's disgusting. We are talking about human beings here. I just do not understand how so many babies can die or contract diseases in public hospitals in this country, yet nobody is ever responsible. Plain sick.

Well, the doctors are threating to mass-resign if the Government do not comply with their demands, the saddest thing is that as usual people are left to suffer such is the case of a woman whose baby died on her womb and NO doctors were able to check on her because they were not available:

Then a young mom whose twin babies were in breech position had to waited for more than 5 hours soaking in blood because again there were NO doctors and they would NOT answer to their cel phones. Two midwives had to deliver the babies by normal delivery even though the girl needed to have a C-section! Thank God, the babies are fine:

Another baby dies in a public hospital When is this madness going to stop? Just because someone does not have the resources to pay for a private hospital doesn't mean they should be treated like dogs.

This is beyond ridiculous! Mt. Hope needs to closed down until an internal investigation takes place! The are putting in risk the lives of thousands of people. My heart aches as I read this story....Are these people nurses, doctors for REAL? They should all have their licenses removed!

| Baby Luke was treated for an ear infection following which he died but a post mortem has revealed he was suffering from meningitis. He was an energetic and healthy one-year-old, just weeks shy of his second birthday. His sudden death on Tuesday morning, less than two weeks after he was diagnosed and treated for an ear infection at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, came as a shock to his parents Shawn and Cindy Marshall. But the pain and shock for the Marshalls did not end there. Results of the post mortem which was conducted yesterday indicated that Luke was actually suffering from meningitis, swollen lungs and inflammation of his brain tissue. "I want to know why, why they didn't keep my son for observations when they had the chance. We brought him to that hospital on two occasions before Tuesday. My child didn't have to die, they could have saved him. We have to take action,"said Luke's distraught mother. Baby Luke, who had three siblings, was the Marshalls only son. Shawn Marshall, 32, is a senior foreman with United Electricals while Cindy 35, is a housewife. The family lives off Santa Cruz Old Road, San Juan. On March 4, little Luke was taken to the paediatric accident and emergency department for a fever and ear ache. His parents also noticed that Luke was unable to sit or stand on his own. During their two-hour stay at the hospital, one of the nurses told the Marshalls that Luke had a build-up of ear wax. She prescribed Ibuprofen (three teaspoonfuls daily after meals) and Cerumol ear drops, after which the Marshalls left the hospital. On Monday the Marshalls grew concerned when they realised that little Luke was sleeping throughout the entire day and also had laboured breathing. The infant was also refusing to eat. "I came home that night and went straight to his crib. He wasn't breathing normally, I felt his chest and his heart was racing so we rushed him to the hospital again. When I explained to one of the nurses that we were concerned that he was sleeping all the time, she laughed and said 'You bringing the child because he's sleeping'. But you see, I know my son and what was happening to him was unusual," said Luke's father. One of the nurses gave the Marshalls a prescription for antibiotics and they were also instructed to continue giving Luke the Ibuprofen and Cerumol. Then early Tuesday morning, things took a turn for the worst. "I went to the pharmacist to get the medication and he told me that I had to go back to the hospital to confirm the prescription because he said the dosage was way too high for a two-year-old. It was while I was on my way to the hospital that I got a call from my sister who was taking care of Luke, she said his tongue was brown and he was not breathing normally and they were rushing him to the hospital," said Cindy Marshall. One of the antibiotics prescribed for little Luke was Amoxil 560mg which several pharmacists feel is too high a dosage and not the norm for patients so young. Marshall met her sister at the hospital. Luke was still breathing but was unconscious. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. The Marshalls were told shortly after 10 a.m that their son had died. |

Well it sounds like you need a real government that can fix things down there. I still think that things are going to get a lot worse before it gets any better down there. The fact that the doctors are striking because of the conditions of the hospital does not surprise me. And your right it is the normal people who suffer because the doctors will not work.

If you want to have a baby or get your child checked properly then save the money and take him to someone privately. When you trust in free service you get shoddy treatment.

Another baby dies in a public hospital in Trinidad and Tobago. In this case was a 15 pounds baby whose parents have been trying to get a C-section for the mother and allegedly the doctors kept putting it off. It was too late. Not only that, but doctors did not want to take out the dead baby from her womb and they said it could stay inside her for 6 weeks without a problem and that her case was not an emergency.

Her husband, Kervon Taylor, has filed a complaint with the South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) and is seeking legal advice.
"This is negligence at the highest level. My wife had a perfect pregnancy. There were no complications," said Taylor, an ambulance driver of Cameron Trace, Buenos Ayres, Erin, yesterday.
Taylor said his wife was two weeks overdue when she began experiencing abdominal and back pains on Carnival Tuesday.
"We went to our private doctor and he advised that we do an ultrasound. We did the ultrasound and the doctor said the baby was too big and there was not enough room inside her to move around. The doctor wrote a letter for her to be admitted to the hospital for an emergency C-Section," he said.
Crichlow-Taylor went to the health institution last week Thursday, but doctors allegedly said her baby was in no danger. An ultrasound showed that the baby boy was active and there was no need for the emergency procedure, Taylor, 28, said. Source 1
