Popup Blockers

For those of you who do a lot of web browsing (like me), is there anything more annoying than popup windows? Or worse yet, the cascade of popup windows, where before you can close one two more popup, and more keep popping up as you try to keep closing them???

I've tried a lot of different popup blockers over the years, and the nicest one yet is the this: Clean My PC Free Popup Blocker. The system requirements are: Win98/ME/2000/XP, IE 5.0 or above. It integrates itself right into your Internet Explorer Browser without you having to do a thing. It sits next to your "links" and "address" bars, and the only thing you'll ever notice is if you look up in that corner of the screen you will see the application name and the number of popup windows its blocked. You can reset the number to zero if you want. I've reset mine a couple times, but right now its up to 89 popups blocked already.

And in case you want a popup window to appear, disabling it is as easy as clicking on its icon, and then clicking the "Block Web Popups" line to remove the checkmark. When you want it to block popups again you just repeat the process so the checkmark reappears. The only time I ever disable it is for the TV Guide Webpage, where the TV show descriptions popup in funny javascript boxes.

Otherwise, the only way you'll ever know the program is there is the fact that you no longer see popup windows when you websurf. biggrin.gif

of course you could always use the better browser in Netscape which has that built in and it is quite effective wink.gif

You need to be sure you understand how the software you are using works and also be prepared that some website features won't work. The average computer user probably is better off just dealing with the popups because they won't have a clue why something doesn't work.

For example, the web interface for outlook/exchange mail uses pop ups to actually open the message. You can connect to the mail server and see what you have for messages but you won't be able to open them if you are suppressing pop ups. Now, Jeff, you are tech savy enough to know to unblock them, but a lot of people are not.

FYI, exchange web mail doesn't work in Netscape or the AOL browser. This is probably because of the popup blocking feature.

The CleanMyPC popup blocker only has four options on a single dropdown menu: Visit homepage, online help, block web popups, and reset counter. Its easier than pulling taffy.

And about my being tech savvy, I spent nine hours (yes, I said nine hours) trying to install a PCI dialup modem card yesterday. I visited five websites for help, downloaded drivers from two websites, uninstalled and reinstalled the modem about 25 times, and resolved about fifteen error messages. Finally I went to the Hardware Conflicts list in System Information (I have Windows XP Pro), and found that my modem card had an I/O address conflict and memory range conflict with my PCI to PCI bridge. Then I was stuck, because I didn't know what values I could change the modem to so it wouldn't conflict with anything else.

I returned the card today in exchange for the other brand, and got my modem card operating in five minutes. So I wasted nine hours yesterday.

JB, I just don't like the look and 'feel' on Netscape Navigator (or whatever the current version is called). I've used Netscape a little, but its not for me. I stick with IE (I refuse to update to their ridiculous MSN Explorer 8.0). I'd pay to use Opera before I used MSN Explorer, which I had briefly(3 weeks) when I was experimenting with different OS's.

Then I worry that people will use this and not be able to use programs like the Exchange Remote Mail Web Client and they won't know why they can't open their Exchange Mail from home. I have had users at work report problems to me with our Exchange remote access when the only problem was they were running Pop Up Cop.

For Yahoo! users, the new Yahoo! Companion Toolbar, which is free, has a built in pop-up blocker that works fairly well. It is very easy to enable and disable when the need to do so arises. I understand Google also has a similar product, but I havent tried it out.

Yes, I use the google one and I absolutely love it. It, too, is easy to enable and disable.
