Scowling, Kettle removes and wrings out her sopping wet, soft boots, and dries her feet with her cloak, while trying to make sense of the evil-smelling symbol on the cave floor...
she thinks to herself about the 8 pointed star, with an 8 pointed star inside it. What could it mean? But the worst is the shackles dangling from the wall, and bloody! She shivers, teeth chattering as she ponders the three doorways/openings on the far wall...
Kettle pulls her boots back on, still wet, but at least not dripping anymore.
Heric slowly walks to the mouth of each cave and takes a deep breath,
"Which ever one of these tunnels smells the least is the one I'm takin', and if they all smell the same, well I didn't say this method was perfect. We can take it nice and slow like always. We should not split up -- not down here."
Kettle agrees... "Let's try tossing some rocks down each tunnel, to see if it triggers anything."
Alex agrees. "We can both smell the air at each tunnel and also toss some rocks into each one of them. Kettle's idea of using her cloak to dry her feet is also good, I suggest that the others who are not wearing leather boots do the same."
La Reina says, "I'm game so let's go."
She checks the torch to see about how much time it will still burn... and you see that you have about less than two hours.
At the entrance closest to the symbol you throw some small pebbles you find on the ground. You hear the pebbles bounce off the walls of the cave and then stand still. You can tell it is a corridor. There is a faint odor coming from here, but you are not sure what to make of it.
At the same time...
Kettle hunkers down next to a point of the star to examine the candles and sand more closely... She pokes a candle with her dagger to see how soft it is...may be a clue as to how long it's been sitting. Pinching a small bit of the white sand, Kettle sniffs it.
Doing these things do not bring much to mind or hear and lack of soul and mind do not help either.
Heric then throws another small rock into the middle entrance and you find that it hits another wall quickly. It is a smaller room inside. You hear a flutter sound and the odor is repugnant, like a urinal.
The last entance which is closest to the water you throw another small rock and find that it too also quickly hits what seems to be a wall, maybe another small room, but you are not sure, everything is so dark and your torch is not much help. You smell, but do not smell anything, nor do you hear any noise from this entrance.
You wonder which entrance to take or what to do.
GM: Say what you will do now. If you wish to go down an entrance then you have the choice of three; one nearest the symbol, one nearest the water or the one in the middle of the two. Be specific in what everyone will do and who will enter each room first, second, etc.
Alex moves ahead into the corridor nearest to the symbol and then the rest follow behind. Since LaReina is holding the torch it is very difficult for Alex to see much ahead as you walk cautiously down the corridor which sways to the north east (going right). You reach a mouth that seems to open into a dark room. You see something white on the floor ahead, but cannot make it out.
GM: Say what you will do now.
LaReina goes to the front of the party, she stands still at the opening, she raises her hand into the room so the torch's light can shine brightly. On the floor ahead to one corner of the oval shaped room you see a skelenton on the ground in no particular position. The rest of the room has rags cast about, a pair of old boots, lots of pebbles scattered about and some sort of sticky substance on the ground but you cannot tell what it is...
GM: Say what you will do now.
LaReina holds the torch up, but it is too dark above and the cieling disappears in the darkness.
Alex enters the room very cautiously and tries not to touch any of the sticky substance which has already attached itself to his leg. Alex's intention is to inspect the rags.
Heric decides to remain back and look on at the happenings.
Alex feels unsure of what he is doing when suddenly he feels something drop on his back.
"Arggghhhhh" says Alex.
Heric yells, "Quick woman, shine your torch"
LaReina lifts the torch in the direction of Alex to see a huge black object over his back, its legs which are long and hairy curl about him and it's image is one that would scare even a demon from hell!
Alex falls to the floor while yelling in pain.
As you look on stunned you see another black object drop to the ground. You are facing two giant black spiders!
GM: Say what you will do now. Alex is not dead, but feels weak and becoming weaker for some reason.
LaReina and Kettle push into the room to attack the second spider while Heric tries to 'back' stab the one on Alex's back. Alex tries to move, but the weight of the spider is too great for Alex even with his above average strength which is now weakened.
Everyone has the sticky substance on their legs now, those not wearing leather boots will find the substance incredibly cumbersome and annoying as it seems to slow you down.
Heric who has a notable advantage to back stab goes up to the giant spider that cleaves to Alex and with a quick motion plunges his long sword into its back! A squeal of sorts is heard and the Spider loosens its grip off of Alex as it dies. A green fluid comes out of it's body.
Heric helps Alex to his feet and proceeds to take him out of the room.
Meanwhile...
LaReina swings in fury hitting the spider a good blow, but her back hand slash misses completely.
Kettle tries to followup but the spider jumps back quickly and Kettle's stab is for naught.
By this time Heric has brought Alex to rest near the symbol. Alex seems to be sweating profusely. He looks pale and feels thirsty.
The giant spider aims for LaReina and misses, but LaReina is not so merciful and the final blow from her short sword brings the spider to its own sticky substance on the ground.
GM: Say what you will do now.
You take deep breaths and try to recover from your first big battle. You delay in time causes the poison to go through Alex's blood even more as he starts to close his eyes as though he were going to sleep. Great droplets of sweat come from his pores and he is starting to burn up.
GM: Alex is now on 1 HP, reduced from 2. Say what you will do now.
Heric will look through alex's bag to see if he can find anything to treat poison. He will then inspect Alex for a wound...
"Alex where are you hit?" Heric asks Alex with a little despair in his voice.
Alex shows the open wound in his upper shoulder blade. You take off his clothes and cloak to have a better look.
"Stay awake Alex you have to help me help you! If one of you know anything about poison, now is the time to share it", this while a thunderous slap comes from Heric's palm to Alex's face.
Alex is not pleased that you hit him and he watches you with a frown, but at the same time he is too sick to hold malice. He quickly explains that the herbs he has is not for blood poison, but for wounds and temporary pain relief. He does show you how to make a paste with the herbs for healing to put over the open wound.
Heric does as Alex instructs, but it does not look good. Alex will need rest to reduce the poison's effects, however you are not sure how much time he has left without a real antidote.
GM: Say what you will do now.
Alex starts to tremble and then convulse... then all of a sudden he stays very still and his arms fall lymph, so does his neck also like a drunken man. You are amazed and quickly listen for a heart beat. It beats!
GM: Alex is now in an unconscious state (HP=0), not dead, but may soon be. Say what you will do now.
