Finland's Lipponen "admits nothing" over US embassy cable Local Finland News In English
Paavo Lipponen, a former speaker of the Finnish Parliament, wrote in a letter to the editor printed in the Tuesday issue of national daily Helsingin Sanomat that he had not corroborated a 2004 US embassy cable claiming he had reported the contents of talks between Tarja Halonen and Vladimir Putin, the Finnish and Russian leaders, to Earle Mack, the then US ambassador. He added that he had found no record of any meetings, telephone conversations or other communications with Halonen, Mack or other American diplomats in December 2004, the date mentioned in the cable.
