Teenagers are rejecting the ideal of the bronzed Aussie body. Only 45 per cent of teens prefer suntans and only 12 per cent believe tanned people are healthier, a study by the Cancer Council has found. The chief executive of the Cancer Council Australia, Ian Olver, said the fashion for tans was unhealthy. Even the iconic image of the surf lifesaver now included hats, visors, zinc and shirts. Only 45 per cent of the nearly 1400 people aged between 12 and 17 in the study said they preferred to be tanned, compared with 60 per cent in 2003.
