How much of your brain power is lost to any addiction?

Is it possible that any addiction until you chose to break it actually reducing your thinking capacity and ability to reason by the same amount.

How truly different is it to be drunk and not right of mind then is it to have your couscous mind dwelling on darkness of an addiction like gambling that consumes your every thought? Once you start into the addictive act they are the same as nothing else around you at that time matters thus your unsober in both cases.

Any thoughts on that?
