Tobago Behavioral Specialist

Tobago Behavioral Specialist

Name: Karin

Comments: Hello folks... I moved to Tobago 3 years ago with my husband who was raised here and our son. My work experience in the US was with autism focused on behavioral therapy and intervention, though I was trained by the best in the field on many many more support therapies. I believe I can make a big impact working with educators and families. Several children have not been in school for years due to lack of behavioral support. I'm just now beginning my quest to help these lovely kids, their families and teachers. I'm hoping to become employed through the TRHA where I can make a greater impact. Any advice or support would be greatly appreciated, and I'd be more that happy to share my history.I've helped folks do what no one believed can be done. Some of which society had given up on... And guess what? It was no miracle that they integrated into society, found work or succeeded...It was never giving up trying to find the key to unlock the closed door. Thanks for listening. I hope to hear from many of you.

It's great to hear about a specialist in Tobago. Would you mind answering some questions?

1. Where are you from? (I assume the US because you mentioned of your work experience there?)

2. What exactly is your specialization and education? (Phd? Master? and in what field)

3. Are you currently seeing patients in Tobago?

Comments: I'm from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. I was a Program Coordinator/case manager. I received extensive training through the corp. I worked for. All of my individuals were dual diagnosed. I recieved ongoing training based on each particular need. My ongoing trainings were conducting assessments, developing behavorial plans, community integration, job coaching, seizures, down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, psychosis, bi polar disorder, medication administration, medication side effects, non-verbal communication, adaptive equipment and others. I worked on a daily basis implementing physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and worked with families on behavioral strategies and intervention. I created lesson plans and schedules and conducted state and care related meetings. If you would like, I can send you a copy of my CV to allow a better understanding of what I did. I've worked in the special needs field for 20 years now.

Thanks for the infomation Karin. You say you were a Program Coordinator/case manager and that you received training through the corporation you was working for but what I would like to know is your formal education, basically if you are a qualified/register therapist (And in what field) or a medical doctor, psychologist, etc or none of these.

Comments: I am a certified medication Administration Trainer and also certified in Phebotomy. Due to each state having their own requirements for special needs supports workers based on their position, the employer will schedule the mandated courses. A minimum of yearly trainings are required by state law and employers sponsor all trainings and any desired additional trainings. I asked to participate in as many as possible. Most trainings can range between 1 week to 6 weeks based on the subject, followed by an exam by a registered trainer or specialist. With the exception being, CPR and First Aid and Fire Safety which are one day trainings. You must be trained on each condition an individual on your case load was diagnosed with including such things as diabetes. Once completion you are in daily contact with all therapists related to the specific case. Pyschiatrists often referred individuals to our team for support with extreme violence towards others and self abusive behavior. The majority of the individuals I served had spent their entire lives in an institution and received little if no early intervention. I have also been asked to speak at several local universities lecturing to Psychology and Art Therapy majors. I've conducted assessments, written behavioral plans that were submitted to the assigned Psychiatrist for approval. So a formal degree I have not Wink Just lots of experience working with a diverse range of professionals, consumers and many trainings. To better understand exactly what my responsibilities were, please feel free to send me an email and I will gladly write you back with an attachment of my CV. . . . . PS. My earlier employment was assisting in long term observation and ongoing assessments for children.
