Trinidad More Than One Child With Autism

Trinidad More Than One Child With Autism

My oldest son (almost 9) was diagnosed with PDD-NOS and ADHD. He is high functioning. I also have two more children. The middle one is 32 months (will be 3 in few months) and besides Mama, dadda and ONE more word he does NOT say anything else. We do phonics with him on a daily basis but he does not seem interested in learning. He does eye contact, he understands and follows simple directions, etc but he just does not speak.

One thing that caught my attention is that since he was born he has been always a very. Very quiet child (he still is) but lately he is having some tantrums that are really bad. If he wants something and is not being done *right away*, or if we do not understand what he wants or simply he is told "no", he will create this huge tantrum, shout to the top of his lungs, try to hit and even bite. I am aware that lack of speech (And the fact that I already have a child with autism) is a big red flag but I am hoping to get some input from a professional to see what they think.

I read the chances of having another child with autism are pretty low, but the chances of having another child with some sort of development delay/speech delay is a little higher (but still low). He seems to be in that bracket. But I am aware there are families with more than one child with autism.

My youngest child is 11 months and he does not say Mama or Dadda as the others did at this age. He claps his hands (but does not wave goodbye), smiles, he is very social and physical, makes baby sounds but no words, none yet. Of course, after the experiences I am having I am very concerned since they are ALL boys and I know autism runs in boys more than it runs in girls.

Is it possible that all three have autism? Or do you think that it could be that the younger two are just having some sort of development delay and they will catch up?

Autism Child Than Trinidad

As an update, my 11 months old baby said "baba" and "mama" for first time today. He says more "baba" than "mama". He said it many times but he is not saying it constantly. I know it is hard not to get "paranoid". Specially because my middle son said mama and dadda and everything and he is not speaking.

Comments: Your best bet is not to speculate but to get your children assessed at an early age. If you do not have access to a psychologist, try a developmental pediatrician, or even regular pediatrician who can speak to your concerns, especially in the area of language development.
