What's Your Traditional New Year's Day Meal? - Page 2

Well the thing to do in Oklahoma and throughout much of the south/southwest is to have the first thing you eat be blackeyed peas, either with or without ham hocks, to have good luck in the coming year. I didn't do it this year, so I hope I don't have bad luck..bought the bag of black eyed peas and was going to do it 'from scratch' instead of from a can, but then a lot of stuff happened and couldn't get a 'roun toit' (always seem to need one of those!) so I didn't prepare or eat them.

Meal Day Years Traditional Whats

We normally have another Christmas dinner, but on a slightly smaller scale. Even so, we have the turkey, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, carrots, sprouts, stuffing , peas and gravy, followed off by either Christmas pudding and cream, or strawberry trifle. We also have the Christmas crackers to pull too!
my mouth is watering at just the thought of it laugh.gif

Comments: We always have a traditional New Years Day dinner with lots of family and friends (those we would like to spend the coming year with). We always have ham, pork loin, mashed potatoes, gravy, saurekraut (cooked with a penny in it), blackeyed peas, macaroni and cheese, etc. with a round cake for dessert. This year I am planning on Hopping John and adding a coin to the round cake.

Meal Day Years Traditional Whats

It is my families tradition to eat pork right after the new year sets in. It is supposed to bring good luck to the family for the year. Later on in the day on new years day we have a nice pork roast with sauerkraut. We usually have mashed taters and other fixings. We try to change up on some of the side dishes.

Comments: Traditional New Years Eve Dinner In East Texas is Fried Chicken, Black Eyed Peas(for luck?), Cabbage(for wealth?) and Tea. I've never understood this so I think I will just make crab cakes and a nice salad this year! ha! works for me.

Comments: As long as I can remember, our traditional New Year's Day meal was black-eyed peas, cole slaw or collard greens, hog jowl, raw onion and cornbread.

I was always told that the peas were for prosperity, the cole slaw and greens for good health, hog jowl for good luck, raw onion to ward off bad luck/evil spirits and the cornbread to sop it all up!

You guessed it - I'm from the South. My peas and greens are cooking on the stove right now!

Comments: My family always has the same meal every year, we eat the roast pork loin that has been roast in about two jars of saurkraut, the pork is symbolic of rooting towards the new year, suarkraut is symbolic of money, or prosperity the green cabbage I guess is it's origin. The Speatzle which are homemade German noodles are what I make, they are cut from the side of a bowl and dropped like dumplings into salty boiling water, when they float up, they look like little doves in flight, which is the German meaning of the word speatzle. The dove is for peace. We also eat a tangy green jello salad with pineapple chunks and walnuts, that's probably not symbolic but tastes pretty damned good!
