Is it possible to vote for the Democrats and say you support LDS Standards? Should every member be a Republican? Can you be a good Mormon and a Democrat?

Dbackers, actually I understand your views. I suppose it is not an issue to me because these two parties are not from my country or where I am living at the present moment BUT what I am trying to say is that you and a lot of members here believe in men being called by God in whatever calling they're assigned to. Well, Pres. James E. Faust was a Democrat, his beliefs did not stop him from actively participate in his Church calling as a counselor to a Prophet neither he was denied a Temple Recommend because he was a Democrat. There are MANY more examples like him.

Sure, I have some close relatives that are Democrats, so I know that the issue of being a Democrat is not a problem in the Church.

I would just hope that Mormon Democrats will work within the Party to change certain aspects of that party, as I am working as a Republican to change certain aspects of my party to fit my world view. Such is the nature of political parties in the United States, the individual members do all that they can to shape the party. I suspect that Elder Faust did not agree with every tenant of his party and hoped the day would come when certain aspects of it would Change.

Rather off topic, but...

Consider the fact that up until the late 1960's the Democratic party in the United States was the party that fought every piece of Civil rights legislation that they came across, and the Republican Party had a significantly better record on Civil Rights then their counterparts. Parties change because members inside of it change it internally. It is a fluid process I believe, and I see many in both parties fighting to increase the freedoms of their constituents. I also see in both parties those that would restrict freedoms and propose things that I find abhorrent.

Dbackers, then what is the issue? If both parties have things that need to change and hopefully party members are working towards that, why then is the issue of a Mormon being a Democrat?

I never meant to imply that it was an issue.
I just think the Democratic Party is becoming too Liberal in its views and drawing too much of its inspiration from its Secular Humanist crowd.

I think for me this is more of a political view, then a spiritual one. Thus I would not think differently of anyone due to them being a Democratic Mormon. I disagree with them strictly because of some of their Democratic views(and that would have included Elder Faust).

Good thing we can all disagree, and still respect each other as individuals.

Isiah53 I'm not sure I'm getting you. You want Pres. Monson to start acting like the the pope does making a statement on every issue?

McKay I am not sure what you are asking? Please be more specific what you do not understand. I am not too sure how the Pope acts? I am not catholic so all I have is my perceptions as an outsider and I do not think that is probably very accurate assumptions on my part. So I cannot answer you on that issue of Pres. Monson.

All that I was referring to was some history of the church dealing with politics. It is not as sanitized and clean separation as many think. I stated that today the church says it only gets involved in moral issues. Such as gay marriage. My question then is what makes a moral issue, because the lack of health care for the poor the tax breaks to the rich, the housing crisis caused by the banks to gain, and of course the War are all moral issues. But the church is silent on them. I just wonder why these pressing issues are not discussed but gay marriage is? They seem to be political right rhetoric that the church seems to be duped into. That was what I am asking?

Republicans and democrats are both the same now. Remember when Joseph said that these 2 parties would destroy America and a new independent party would form.

Rather off topic, but...
Libertarians follow Mormon doctrine ideals more than any other party. Ron Paul all the way.

Romney is a tool for the lawyers (Gadianton).

That is just what I think.

I think people should vote for Obama so that they can show that they are not racist. He has a strong support from the younger generation.

He talks about change with no solutions.

If you all wanted to be PC then everyone should have voted for Allen Keyes in 2000. That Dude is awesome. But that was before I knew what was going on.

Vote for whoever. It is all the same. McCain or Obama. They don't run things.

McCain is psycho and Obama is in love with his own image.

Whatever happened to voting for a candidate because they supports your ideals and you believe they are the best person for the job? To just make disparaging remarks about the candidates without providing the documentation to support your words is slanderous and non-constructive. Your last two posts appear to show a lot of bias on your part. Perhaps those things would be better discussed in a more appropriate thread. Of course constructive posting is required in all threads on this forum.

This thread is to discuss whether or not you can be a so-called "good Mormon" and a Democrat. Can the two successfully co-exist or are they mutually exclusive?
Personally, I believe they can. I do not personally align myself with any political party, choosing to vote my conscience based upon each candidates qualifications and track record. I seem to vote Democrat more than Republican but have also been known to vote Independent, Libertarian or something else if that is where my alliance fell. I have never done anything in the political arena that would go against my religious convictions or put me in danger of forfeiting my standing in the Church. So my answer to the question, as I have said before, is Yes.

He is going to talk to his lawyers (gadianton) and bypass our great constitution?

Was it alright to vote for Satan in the pre-existence? A 3rd of them thought so.

Things have not changed much here.

You are responsible for who you support. I would like to thank the Clintons for Nafta and Gat.

America has become an evil decadent society that has robbed and murdered from other countries and we think that is alright? We think we are better? We are not and unfortunately we will pay.

We are controlled by secret societies and we have done little to stop it. So do you vote for a liar? A war monger?

Read about the prophets and what they say about this matter. ALL OF THEM.

Can you be a good mormon and vote for evil? ..............That is betwean you and God.
