"Our Father in Heaven planned the coming forth of the Founding Fathers and their form of government as the necessary great prologue leading to the restoration of the gospel. Recall what our Savior Jesus Christ said nearly two thousand years ago when He visited this promised land: 'For it is wisdom in the Father that they should be established in this land, and be set up as a free people by the power of the Father, that these things might come forth' (3 Nephi 21:4). America, the land of liberty, was to be the Lord's latter-day base of operations for His restored church."

"Fifty-six men signed the document on August 2, 1776, or, in the case of some, shortly thereafter. They pledged their lives!--and at least nine of them died as a result of the war. If the Revolution had failed, if their fight had come to naught, they would have been hanged as traitors. They pledged their fortunes!--and at least fifteen fulfilled that pledge to support the war effort. They pledged their sacred honor!--best expressed by the noble statement of John Adams. He said: 'All that I have, and all that I am, and all that I hope, in this life, I am now ready here to stake upon it; and I leave off as I begun, that live or die, survive or perish, I am for the Declaration. It is my living sentiment, and by the blessing of God it shall be my dying sentiment, Independence, now, and INDEPENDENCE FOR EVER'
(Works of Daniel Webster, Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1877, 17th ed., 1:135)."

Personally I don't think that Latter-Day Saints should be Republicans or Democrats. LDS doctrine is that the Lord has commanded us to uphold the Constitution.
The Church has released official statements that we should only support candidates who will support the constitution and oppose socialism.
It is obvious that the Democrat and Republican Parties do not support the Constitution and are both Socialistic.
I stand with President Benson, W. Cleon Skousen, and others in my declaration that our Government and both major political parties have been infiltrated by the "Secret Combinations lusting for power, gain, and glory. . ." and that "A secret combination that seeks to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries is increasing its evil influence and control over America and the entire world." (See Ether 8:18-25.)
The Latter-Day Saints have will have an important role in restoring Constitutional Government to the Land and in establishing Zion/New Jerusalem. . . This will not be done in a socialistic manner. We need people who stand for freedom and true constitutional principles. The Lord has spoken regarding what side we should be on and now He is leaving it up to you of whether or not you'll follow.

Offtopic but, I would love to see some of your political views in the Activism Board, but keep in mind that Religion is not discussed there. |
Yes that is true that the Church leaves it up to the members to decide for themselves but there are also certain principles the Church believes in and hopes that the members will follow.
The following is part of an official church statement regarding voting:
". . . above all else, strive to support good and conscientious candidates, of either party, who are aware of the great dangers inherent in communism, and who are truly dedicated to the Constitution in the tradition of our Founding Fathers.
"They should also pledge their sincere fealty to our way of liberty-a liberty which aims at the preservation of both personal and property rights.
"Study the issues, analyze the candidates on these grounds, and then exercise your franchise as free men and women."
["The American Presidency and the Mormons," Ensign, Oct. 1972, 47]
The Church will never tell a person who to vote for, but we are commanded by the Lord to uphold the Constitution and only vote for good leaders. Others may see it differently but personally I find few candidates in the Democrat & Republican Parties who truly support and defend the Constitution (which they promise to do when they take their oath of office.)

Offtopic but, Keep in mind the thread is about being an LDS Democrat if you wish to go on a different tangent please conduct a search for similar threads or start a new one. |
Just read the platforms of both the Republican and Democrat Party. You will see that both platforms accept Welfare and other Socialistic Programs. The Prophets have spoken out against SOCIALISM for a long time.
President Ezra Taft Benson agreed with J. Reuben Clark when he said:
"Our real enemies," said President [J. Reuben] Clark, "are communism and its running mate, socialism. . . ."
". . . Its purpose is to destroy the Constitution and our Constitutional government." ("Righteousness Exalteth a Nation" 516-17; also in TL 109-10)
BOTH Democrats & Repbulicans, by supporting socialism, give Latter-Day Saints reason enough not to be Republican or Democrat.
I say any good and faithful Latter-Day Saint should not be Republican or Democrat.
Brimm at first I thought I agreed with you, but this last post has me disagreeing. The Church itself has many programs that you refer to as socialistic. We have a welfare program of our own, for example. Heck, the United Order certainly sounds socialist at the least, or even perhaps communist.
So, while I agree members should find out what each candidate stands for and then vote based upon their personal beliefs as well. I don't think it can be said that they can't be a good member and be either democrat or republican. I think one must be one or the other in the US in order to have any real ability to compete as a candidate. I think it is important to have LDS politicians. So, while I personally question how an LDS member could align themselves with the democratic party, I don't believe it can be because they support social welfare programs.
