Utah Doctor Using Kryptonite To Fuse Bones

No, it's not a joke and it isn't the same Kriptonite from Superman but a new syrup-like material bearing the same name.

SALT LAKE CITY -- In the fictional and evolving legend of Superman, Kryptonite was that stuff from his native planet Krypton. While it was the only material that could rob him of strength, the K-metal gave humans superhuman powers.

Superman's Kryptonite was green and always a threat, but a new syrup-like material bearing the same name, has become one of the newest and most amazing medical adhesives.

According to University of Utah cardiothoracic surgeon Amit Patel, "surgeons actually apply it anywhere from five to seven minutes of actually mixing it up. But by the time they leave the operating room, it's already set; and by the first morning after surgery, it's already solid."

Patel is this country's first cardiothoracic surgeon to use Kryptonite to fuse breast bones back together during heart surgery.

"This accelerates wound healing, decreases the rate of infection, and just really makes the body heal itself much quicker," Patel said.

In his first 50 cases, the compound has shown dramatic results.

"While not encouraging patients to resume activities early, we started getting reports from those who were water skiing two weeks after surgery, or lifting tires that weighed over 100 pounds," Patel said.

In fact, Joe Magee was the patient who lifted that tire. Kryptonite repaired his breastbone following heart bypass surgery.

"Not only did I experience very little pain, I was helping the guys at a North Dakota Trucking Company load some equipment one day and a big truck tire fell over," Magee said. "I helped grab it and threw it back up on the truck. You know, I was lifting 150 pounds in the first five to six weeks after surgery."  Source 3
