I'm a big Aquaman fan. I would say he is my favourite comic book superhero (superceded only by his unwitting replacement Arthur Joseph Curry in the now defunct 'Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis'), and I was upset when the character was killed off. So imagine my excitement when 'Brightest Day' rolled around and we saw the original Aquaman ressurected to co-star in the series, and now taking the central role in the 'Aquawar' story arc! However, good as this is, it isn't quite the same as a new ongoing series, and if the voice of the white power ring in its conversation with Boston Brand at the beginning of 'Brightest Day' no. 19 is anything to go by, it looks increasingly likely that Aquaman may be killed off again before too long!
Does anyone else share my concern for the future of this much beloved and unfairly berated character?
Aquaman in his early days was a pretty cool comic character but for some reason now I think his powers are over rated and limited because most battles take place in space and on land. Of course were a battle to go in the deep sea he will have many things going for him but that's not a regular occurrence.
There's certainly some truth in that, which is one of the reasons I liked Sword of Atlantis so much, because it was done in an almost fantasy style, set mostly in or around Atlantis and other underwater cities, with only vague references to the surface world until later in the series. It treated Aquaman's domain as an equally important - if somewhat separated - part of the DC Universe's world, that other heroes and villains had their own politics with and opinions toward.
Also, in Superman/Batman issue 45, Joseph Curry and Superman have an awesome fight. Look out for it if you can get your hands on it as a back issue.
