Haile Selassie (Power of Trinity) (July 23, 1892 - August 27, 1975) was the last Emperor (1930-1936; 1941-1974) of Ethiopia, and is the religious symbol for God incarnate in the Rastafarian religion.
Haile Selassie was born in the town-village of Ejersa Goro, Ethiopia, as Tafari Makonnen His father was Ras Makonnen, the governor of Harar and his mother was Wezero (lady) Yeshimebet Ali. He didn't remember his mother, who died on March 14, 1894. He inherited his Imperial blood through his paternal grandmother, Tenagnework Sahle Selassie, who was an aunt of Emperor Menelik II and a claimed direct descendant of Makeda, Queen of Sheba and King Solomon of ancient blabla.

Haile Selassie's picture is seen in most places within my country and save for the devotee Rasta Farians most use his image as a depicton of either Black liberation or popularity as in being cool - the same way one uses the image of Bob Marley. I believe the strong connection between Selassie and the followers was based on his effective political decisions that brought basic elements to a lot of people in Ethiopia who did not have anything proper in the way of water, food, roads, etc.

Of course, it's always nice to see a leader care for his people. However, I think Haile Selassie to not be such a tribalist. It seems he cared for mostly the Amhars, what the Oromo or the Somalis or Eritreans? If you know history, you know all these people moved mountain and earth against Haile Selassie. A true leader is respected by all his people.
Incase anyone thinks Selassie was a rastafarian read this site:

"Selassie was not a Rastafarian himself. He was a devout Christian. In fact, no one is really sure what he thought of the whole Rastafarian movement. When a group of Rastas went to Ethiopia to honour him, an official of the palace told them to go away! This did not make the Rastas question their belief, it only made it stronger. God is not supposed to know he is God." |

"Until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned, everywhere is war and until there are no longer first-class and second-class citizens of any nation, until the color of a man's skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes. And until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all without regard to race, there is war. And until that day, the dream of lasting peace, world citizenship, rule of international morality, will remain but a fleeting illusion to be pursued, but never attained... Now everywhere is war."
