Jehue Gordon struck gold in the men's 400 metres hurdles at the IAAF World Championships in Russia, today I wonder what he will get? A house? Money?

international QUOTE
Gordon is only the second T&T athlete to earn World Championship gold, following in the footsteps of 1997 men's 200 metres champion Ato Boldon. Source 6

There is talk of a public holiday for what he did, more holidays? What about the guy that got several medals including gold for marksmanship, they going to give him a holiday too?

I first think that we should offer our congratulations before criticisms. We perhaps aren't as patriotic a people as we should be so I would be the first to say:

Congratulations Jehue you have all done us proud and I hope that you win many more!

Jehue Gordon's mother seems to influence his ability to push himself. At his age he has a lot more to accomplish and I hope he maintains his goal focus in other competitions and do not fall into the 'rest' mode now that he has a gold medal. While I am happy for his accomplishment I cannot agree with a holiday for this either. I also think there needs to be a more consistent way with recognizing athletic performance without it being a cabinet decision each time.

Rather off topic, but...
There is so much basic services neglected in Trinidad & Tobago that should be addressed, I can hardly see paying millions and shutting down a country to celebrate jumping over some hurdles or throwing a stick. Yes, I understand the wider implications of highlighting the country internationally but what about the daily highlighted issues like no water, no electricity, no basic infrastructure, no place for me to get a proper evaluation and therapy for special needs children, and high crime - to me these things need to be addressed and attended to with the same vigor they look to reward athletes. If that is what they call unpatriotic then I guess I am unpatriotic - but that is really a twisted view and I have Discussed this many times within Threads here.
