Caffeine is one of those substances that you can come to be very dependent on. You will need more and more caffeine as you use it to keep you awake and alert. I remember when I was in college that people used it allot and were usually hooked in some form or fashion. Its completely addictive, completely legal, and completely easy to get. Something that you can get at any gas station or convenience store makes it easy to get hooked on.
I made the mistake of taking a half of a Yellow Jacket in high school. It was my sophomore year, and I was sick and I was in the midst of my menstrual cycle, and it was the week of finals. I had an aerobics exam first thing in the morning, and so I wanted to secure an 'A' in that class, and I knew I would only be able to do it with an extra boost of something. So, I hunted down one of my friends I was in winterguard with, and snagged one from her because I knew she had them. Everybody but me that was in guard had been taking them when we performed, so it wasn't hard to get it. I only took half of it because at that time I rarely took any kind of medicated drug, and I knew that trying to take an entire one would rough me up.
Well, I took it, and it did what it was supposed to do. But immediately afterwards, when I actually had to sit in a classroom, I started feeling so sick. My heart was racing, and people were telling me I looked green. I drank so much water trying to purge it from my system. I learned my lesson.
I honestly don't know why people would want to put themselves through that. I can assure you I have not touched one since, and I have very heavily discouraged people from using them.
It is possible to get addicted to Mountain Dew, or any other drink with a high caffeine count, so be careful. I went through withdrawals from Mountain Dew. Once again, during my sophomore year of high school, I was getting to where I would drink, on average, over 200 ounces of Mountain Dew a day within the school period. So that was within, roughly, a six hour period. Then when school got out, I didn't have it as readily available to me like I had, and I went through some sickening withdrawal.
Caffeine is a substance I have had some trouble with in my life. I think it's because I consumed a lot of coke as a teenager, and I became dependent on the substance and still am. I don't have to have a ton of it, but if I don't get at least 200 mg a day (about what is in a cup of coffee), I get a horrible headache and don't have a bit of energy. I'm careful not to take more than this, but only enough to get me by. I wish I could quit the stuff but it's hard to find the time to be useless for a few days, which is what it's going to take. Caffeine pills are so easy to buy, and not fattening like soda or filling like coffee. They are quick and convenient and kids have easy access to them. It's a troubling thing that there is so much abuse of this substance among teenagers.

Comments: All I can say about caffeine is that it kills. I have a cousin who was taking yellow jackets to help him drive truck at night . he now has I opera l liver cancer he is 35 and one year to live. Tell that to his two beautiful little girls. It tears me apart that this is part of the industry. They are far to available. [Who] knows what he was thinking he needed to do this so he could feed his family. Sad so very sad!
People do not see caffeine as a drug with side effects because it is socially acceptable and legal. Truth being caffeine is a stimulant which causes strain on your heart and can result in vasoconstriction (the narrowing of the blood vessels resulting from contraction of the muscular wall of the vessels). Caffine is just as dangerous as any other stimulant such as amphetamine, methamphetamine, cocaine, etc.
Heart problems run in my family so I have tried to avoid caffeine. I also had ADD in school and refused to take dexedrine because of the amphetamine in the drug.
