Prophet Muhammad - Peace Be Upon Him

Why do Muslims always say "Peace Be Upon Him" when saying "Prophet Muhammad" in conversation?

Him Upon Peace Muhammad Prophet

Name: famster

Comments: Muslims say "peace be upon him" because God commanded it in the Qur'an in chapter 33 verse 56.

QUOTE
Qur'an 33:56 "Surely Allah and His angels bless the Prophet; O you who believe! call for (Divine) blessings on him and salute him with a (becoming) salutation."

When this verse was revealed the Muslims at the time asked the Holy Prophet: "How are we to seek blessings on you?" He said:
QUOTE
"Say: 'O Allah, send blessings on Muhammad and on the al (children) of Muhammad."

In Arabic, sending blessings on the prophet is called Salawaat.

ibn Hajar Makki writes in his Sawa-iq al Muhriqah, on page 87, that the Holy Prophet warned the people not to send salawat which has lost the tail I.e. Curtailed. When asked what a curtailed salawat was he replied: "If you stop at 'peace be upon him' You should say:
QUOTE
'O Allah, send your blessings on Muhammad and the family of muhammaad'

In other words Muslims should be saying "peace be upon him & his family" but for one reason or another the majority of muslims have dropped the family from the salawaat.

Name: Dalin

Comments: Why is the prophet's name of the Muslims spelled differently? For instance here you have "Muhammad" but I've also seen "Mohammad" and "Mohammed".
