3 US Soldiers Speak Out on McChrystal's Firing, Petraeus as Replacement, and the Unending War in Afghanistan
President Obama says the Afghan war will continue as planned despite his firing of General Stanley McChrystal over disparaging comments made by McChrystal and his aides about top US officials. Obama has named General David Petraeus, head of the US Central Command and architect of the surge in Iraq, as a successor. The firing of McChrystal comes at a perilous moment in the Afghan war, with June now the deadliest month for the NATO force since the 2001 invasion. We speak to three soldiers: Brock McIntosh, an Afghan war vet who has filed for conscientious objector status; Victor Agosto, who was jailed after refusing to deploy to Afghanistan after serving in Iraq; and Camilo Mejia, the first GI who served in Iraq to have publicly resisted the war. Lawmakers ask for Afghanistan exit strategy:
Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, joined other House members in calling for President Obama to provide Congress with "a clear commitment and plan to withdraw U.S. Forces from Afghanistan" before a vote expected later this week that would provide $58 billion for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Downsizing the military presence in the Middle East sounds good in the press, but the fact remains that the US homeland is in a serious economic recession - maybe depression. If the government brings home all those soldiers from Afghanistan and Iraq and other front lines, what will they do with them? Put them on unemployment? There aren't many jobs available for civilians right now.
Not that I'm defending Obama's waffling on his promises. It's a tough situation that all politicians are struggling with right now.
What's the real solution? I don't agree with our military forces policing Afghanistan. I don't believe a "surge" in unemployment is a good idea, either. Either way, it costs the US taxpayers billions; and with our soldiers or without them, Afghanistan will be in turmoil.
I don't have the answer to this one, and I don't think anyone does.

Unlike Iraq there is no oil, unlike some African nations there is no diamonds or gold, so if you decide to go there you will only be spending more of your own money - Afghanistan is a money pit. Afghanistan has always been occupied it seems but never totally conquered. Better young boys having their life back and going to school in the US rather than in the hot sun looking out at the desert.
