Sorry to burst the bubble of those who think " All will be good" in Afghanistan.
But there is an old saying, that if you don't learn from the past, you're doomed to repeat it! The last successful invasion of Afghanistan was by Alexander the Great. That was a few years ago. A big issue is the planting of poppies, and subsequent distruction of some of those crops. If other crops were planted that allowed the farmers to support their families, and raise up the standard of living of those families, much of the problems there, I believe would disappear. This is a situation of the Haves vs. The Have-Nots. This also dogs the Isrelies vs. The Palestinians.
A milatary state, akin to Northern Ireland, with British troops, does not work.
Big statement from someone who had the US basically 'put' him there. Let's see if he can handle his spiral down from here onwards.

White House report cites progress in Afghanistan
A much-anticipated White House report card on the Afghanistan war concludes that the Taliban are hamstrung in many regions and that al-Qaeda leaders have suffered grave losses. But the five-page public version of the report, released Thursday, was light on detail and focused as much on terrorists operating out of Pakistan as on the country where the fighting is occurring. Afghanistan: Wheels Within Wheels?
By Gwynne Dyer
The simplistic mythology about al-Qaeda's motives that was disseminated by the Bush administration - "they are Islamic crazies who attack us because they hate our values" - has taken such deep root in the American population that Obama cannot argue with it in public. Ref. Source 9
