The issue with this war like so many of the resent ones is the lack of a clearly defined mission or perhaps mission creep. Afghanistan was attacked as a result of the 9/11 happenings. The US went in (With a coalition) and took out the existing government. People voted and they elected a new government, which was a good thing, but was already starting the mission creep issue. Then we had to stay to help the new government get their feet on the ground. Then came the insurgents. Then we had to stay to combat them. Here we are now nearly 13yrs later and things really haven't changed much in the last 11yrs, but a few more coalition forces dead, many insurgents dead and quite a few dead civilians. The US is not appreciated much for the extended stay and we will walk away from it not a whole lot differently than we left Saigon. Yes, we have a government we prefer to be there, but for how long or for how long will it continue to not revert back to its old ways? Not likely very long in my opinion. We probably should have left long ago as I fear the end result isn't going to be any different with our 10 additional years. It is now up to the people of Afghanistan to decide if they want to go forward or revert back. America should exit the business of exporting democratic republics and revert back to the humility that made us the envy of the world and not the arrogance that has brought the ire of the world.
I feel bad for the soldiers as I believe that they should understand the mission/goal that they are trying to achieve when they are asked to potentially give up their lives for and here...I believe for the last 10 yrs or so, that answer would be hard to understand.
