Brazil Fans Celebrate Win Lament Losing Neymar
Global Soccer / Football News
Brazil exploded into collective celebration Friday night after its soccer team won a hard-fought World Cup quarterfinal match against Colombia, 2-1 - then mourned that an injury to star striker Neymar means he's out of the tournament. As the final whistle blew, thousands of fans wearing Brazil's canary-colored jersey and watching the match on Copacabana beach in front of a giant TV screen jumped and screamed with joy. ''After this game, I think that all Brazilians are feeling much more reassured about the team,'' said Luiz Almeida, a university student who celebrated the final whistle by joining in a bouncing group bear hug with friends on the beach. ''I think we're over the hump - I think Brazil will be champions.'' Then came the news that Brazil's leading scorer Neymar had cracked a vertebrae after taking a hard knee in the match - and would no longer play in the Cup.

Soccer-Iconic Match Of The Day Celebrates 50th Anniversary
Global Soccer / Football News
By Martyn Herman LONDON, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Hours after the dust has settled on the first skirmishes of a new Premier League season on Saturday, fans across Britain will flick on the TV, grab a cup of tea and settle down to digest the day's action from a comfy sofa. It is a time-honoured ritual enjoyed by generations, young and old, since the BBC's Match of the Day first appeared on flickering black and white screens on Aug. 22, 1964. When the jaunty, instantly recognisable theme tune strikes up after the BBC News on Saturday evening, former England forward Gary Lineker will invite five million viewers to share in a skilfully edited procession of wonder goals, flying saves and the obligatory contentious refereeing decisions. With sharply-dressed pundits joining Lineker in a plush studio in BBC sport's HQ in Manchester, it looks a bit different to the first episode aired on BBC2 featuring one match - Liverpool versus Arsenal - and introduced from the edge of the Anfield pitch by of king of the microphone Kenneth Wolstenholme.

Arsenal-Leicester City Preview
Global Soccer / Football News
The last time the Foxes were in the Premier League was in the 2003-04 season, when they took a point off the Gunners in a 1-1 draw at home and were beaten 2-1 at Highbury thanks to goals from Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira. Leicester City were relegated that season, while Arsenal went on to win the title. Arsene Wenger's side hasn't won the Premier League since. This generation of Leicester City players will be hoping for much better than a relegation scrap, having come up from the Championship with ease after a heavy spending spree.
