How long can you live without your spleen?

If your Spleen has been surgically removed how long will you be able to live?

My elder brother had his spleen removed when he was 17 years old due to cancer. HE lived until he was 38 and it was not the lack of a spleen that killed him. HE was living a normal life and with no real medical issues. I think that one can live a normal long life without your spleen.

I am no medical doctor but from what I understand so long as you keep taking flu shots you can live a 'normal' productive life.
