House Republicans anointed Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as their choice to be the next speaker of the House during a closed-door party meeting Wednesday.
Ryan, the 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee, currently chairs the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, but as speaker he will be next in line after the vice president for the presidency and one of the most powerful Republicans in the United States. He'll have the daunting task of unifying the House GOP, which enjoys a strong majority on Capitol Hill but has been split over government spending and how to square off against President Barack Obama.
The full House, including Democrats, will vote Thursday to officially choose a new speaker. With the support of the vast majority of his GOP colleagues -- gained after a game of hard-to-get that lasted for weeks -- Ryan is now on a glide path to take the top House leadership position being vacated by Rep. John Boehner. Ref. CNN
