Mock Auction Of Black Students In Virginia

What do you think about this case? Do you think they needed to apologize or we are seeing another example of political correctness?

international QUOTE
NORFOLK, Va. - The superintendent of Norfolk, Va., schools apologized Saturday for a controversial classroom lesson involving the mock auction of black students.

Apparently, during a fourth grade teacher's lesson on the Civil War, students were separated by race. White students on one side and African American and mixed-race students on the other, who were then offered up for auction, Virginia's Fox 43 news reports.

In an April 6 letter to the students' parents and guardians, Principal Mary B. Wrushen wrote, "I recently became aware of a history lesson that was presented to the students in Ms. Jessica Boyle's fourth grade class. Although her actions were well intended to meet the instructional objectives, the activity presented was inappropriate for the students." Source 2

Apologize for what? I think the teacher was merely trying to give an example, I don' think she meant any harm. My goodness, what's become of the US really?

The USA has become more and more of a laughing stock in education. We can not give a real life example of history without offending someone. Our political correctness is tearing this country apart. I do not observe political correctness and I guess that is why people avoid me. I think the way we cow tie to this person or that person we are actually hurting the cultural mix of who we really are.

I hear you loud and clear KNtoran. In the past, I thought about becoming a teacher but situations like this turn me off completely.

I have to agree. At first blush, given the climate of correctness, this IS a boneheaded move on the teacher's part. But upon reflection, as with another teacher that did "buy a girl/guy" example, if everyone in the class is included, then, while yes, the black students are more "at the heart of the matter", that should help impress upon people the reality of the lesson being taught, when the non-black students look at their classmates and imagine the differences that made other people think they were property. This really is just absurd that this "offended" people.

Name: Teacher

Comments: I have to disagree with you guys. The teacher was out of place and disregarded school's regulations with regards to race issues. She meant well but was wrong.
