I think it gives us an advantage, our laymen have to earn their living and so they are able to understand what we go through in life.

Ministry Lay - Mormonism

A lay ministry gives us the opportunity to serve, rather than let the Priests or Ministers do everything. It also forces us to study the scriptures and gospel and grow in ways that we might not otherwise.
