"Turning the other cheek" has nothing to do with self-defense. It deals with insults and provocations. When a person struck another person's cheek, it was meant as an offense, a provocation.
I don't know of anything in the New Testament that indicates that a person should not defend themselves.

I do not believe Jesus was explicitly against self protection with weapons (the right to bear arms).
I cite Matthew 26 51:52
QUOTE |
51 And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear. 52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. |
I view the bible as a guide for man, but because it was written by several authors through the centuries, there are also many contradictions. One may believe that the time during which it was recorded was more violent, but look at the middle east today, if we can learn one thing from the history that has transpired we should know that 'Bearing Arms' solves nothing.
The Old Testament is all retribution and hell fire, it reflects a time of turmoil and in my opinion is fuel to the fire when it is followed to the letter by people who dwell in a country enveloped by war and hate.
America like the Middle East has religious doctrine entwined with it's constitution, and plain and simple, Religion and Politics do not mix. The 'Right to Bear Arms', as we all know is written into the constitution, which contradicts the New Testament. So what does this mean?
Violence begets violence.
Using the bible, which is meant to allow man to ascend, to justify carrying a weapon to hurt and smite their fellow man doesn't make any sense. We have adapt the teachings to our time and start making a change.
