Arms Bear To Bible

The New Testament teaches us to turn th other cheek, but the Old Testament teaches the opposite and actually confirms the idea that is okay to bear arms and even kill to protect / destroy.

"Turning the other cheek" has nothing to do with self-defense. It deals with insults and provocations. When a person struck another person's cheek, it was meant as an offense, a provocation.

I don't know of anything in the New Testament that indicates that a person should not defend themselves.

Where does it say that the "Right to Bear Arms" has anything to do with self defense either? The Right to Bear Arms is just that - an ability to have and access weapons without restraint - no telling what you will do with it after that!

My 'Turn the other cheek' term was to show that the New Testament is more about taking a less violent or totally non-violent stance since Christ said those who pick up the sword shall die by the sword - and so TRUE that is, because we see evidence of it all the time!

Arms Bear To Bible

I do not believe Jesus was explicitly against self protection with weapons (the right to bear arms).

I cite Matthew 26 51:52

QUOTE

51 And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.
52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

At first glance this would indicate that Jesus was saying "do not defend yourself".
I have several questions though.

1. Why did one of Jesus's Apostles have a "side arm" if Christ was completely against defending yourself? He must have given tacit approval for carrying a weapon previously. (He said put it back in its place or in its hilt, and did not say, throw that weapon away, you will not need it.)

2. Was Jesus's words " for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword" a message for the ages, or was it ( as I believe) a warning to his apostles at that time"do not fight now, it is suicide, put your sword away?" Christ also understood that his death was part of the plan so the apostles trying to stop his path to Golgotha would have frustrated that plan.

3. Is God against the use of weapons, or is he more concerned how weapons are used (Murder or self defense, hurting the innocent or protecting the innocent)?

Bible: Right To Bear Arms?

Bible: Right To Bear Arms?

I view the bible as a guide for man, but because it was written by several authors through the centuries, there are also many contradictions. One may believe that the time during which it was recorded was more violent, but look at the middle east today, if we can learn one thing from the history that has transpired we should know that 'Bearing Arms' solves nothing.

The Old Testament is all retribution and hell fire, it reflects a time of turmoil and in my opinion is fuel to the fire when it is followed to the letter by people who dwell in a country enveloped by war and hate.

America like the Middle East has religious doctrine entwined with it's constitution, and plain and simple, Religion and Politics do not mix. The 'Right to Bear Arms', as we all know is written into the constitution, which contradicts the New Testament. So what does this mean?

Violence begets violence.

Using the bible, which is meant to allow man to ascend, to justify carrying a weapon to hurt and smite their fellow man doesn't make any sense. We have adapt the teachings to our time and start making a change.

I do not agree with such sentiments.

I would hold that Violence by evil can ultimately only be countered by violence by the Good. Where in History has non-violence stopped people bound and determined to destroy of their fellow man? Is it ever stopped by words, if the evil man is bound and determined to kill and enslave a race or group of people.

History tells us no. It is stopped by people who are willing to defend the innocent with words first, and weapons if necessary.

Those that will not defend the innocent, while evil men kill and maim them, are guilty of either indifference to their plights at the least, or culpable of their deaths at the worst.

Bible To Bear Arms The Bible Revealed

Does the New Testament, in any part advocate the use of weapons to defend oneself? Indeed, does the New Testament even dictate the approach of defending against physical violence?
